What are the implications of Moscow delivering S-300 air-defense systems to Syria, could one weapon system decide the outcome of the Syrian power struggle, is the Russian missile system as invincible as it is described? Alexey Eremenko from the Russian news agency Novosti provides some answers…

I doubt it is cruise missile, stealth fighter/bomber, or armed drone proof.

Rumor has it, Russians will be manning the batteries, which would probably increase their effectiveness.

I suspect the USA, and/or Israelis could deal effectively with the problem in short order.

Of course, they might lose a few drones or aircraft in the endeavor though, which is why cruise missiles, and/or drones are preferable for this type of work.

The Israelis are scared to death of losing a plane. They don't like the Arabs lynching their men or, even worse, holding them hostage. The Izzies never got Ron Arad back, no matter how many Arabs they offered to trade for him.

If I remember correctly, NATO have some S-300 in one of the European countries. During an exercise they were found to be resistant to counter measures. Scary stuff.

What Zippy says about Israeli aversion to casualties. Then you have the danger of killing Russian crew and the potential of escalation.

Little implications for Syria as I don't think the US or any of the Western powers will do anything directly other than offering their "harshest" condemnations in words and resolutions that will be vetoed by China and Russia. Israel has other means to stop the transfer of weapons to Lebanon imo.

The scary part will be if a Turkish plane is shot down or the Russian crews are hit by AQ. Potentially a fast escalation there. Like the brief Russian-Georgian war, I think outside powers will try for damage control, but will stay far away as possible.

Hopefully Russia and Syria will smite AQ.

Key word "resistant" and of course that is what exercises are for to determine enemy capabilities and develop countermeasures. I have a feeling that they are less resistant know.

The Russians are probably manning it themselves to prevent it being turned to scrap metal!
