Are they compatible with each other? Are they as nice as the Gothic building sets? Is there room on the walkways for 1 inch round bases? Thanks for any help you can provide.

They aren't really compatible, per se, but you can glue them to each other, if necessary. The two sets are very nice, with the Hexagon set being somewhat sturdier and nicer to work with, IMHO.

The squares in the Platformer set are roughly 1.5" across, so there is definitely room there for 1" bases.

No they are not directly compatible. Hexagon use clips to well clip together while Platformer sort of sandwich together then go on these connecters.
I think they are as nice, in their own way. But the Hexagon set is the better of the two types.
Yes they have plenty of space for 1" round bases. The ramps though might give you trouble depending on how top heavy your mini is.

I have loads of these sets, and many of the others from the line, from Robogear starter sets and a clearance sale I stumbled on years ago. I love them for quick terrain building. Most of my sets only had their Russian building instructions, but the pictures are easy to follow. The Pegasus kits though have English guides included.

how do the figures look for robogear stuff?

The mecha I could use, or hack up for interesting debris piles. Ditto the fliers. The terrain looks REALLY nice…

But I never hear about the minis. Some of them look quite… "Characterful"

As others have said, they are not compatible, but are fine for one inch bases. However, the Platformer series is compatible with the "Power Plant" kit.

For stand alone buildings, Hexagon builds much bigger structures, but the clip construction is kind of a give-away. Platformer makes more realistic constructions that are as nice looking as the gothic buildings. It's also the best detail to other models, but the single sided (takes two pieces to make one wall section) construction means that the kit makes much smaller buildings structures.

BigNickR,
The figures are ok, but they are a full head taller than most 28mm stuff. However, the additional lenght is mostly in the legs, so the heads, torsos, and possibly arms and gear could be used for converting figures such as GW guardsmen.
