Hi all, After a couple of years absence from gaming I'm starting back with a new project for the Chechen Wars in 20mm. I've found the Under Fire Minis range which look excellent and will probably start with these. How compatible are they with Elhiem and also with the plastic Orion figures? I was thinking of maybe getting the Russian box to cheaply pad out my forces. Additionally I don't want to go down the plastic kit route (did this for WW2 and it took forever) so what ready made or easy kit AFVs are out there? I know of SandS and have been speaking with Shaun. Lastly any good sources for suitable destroyed city buildings – would Stalingrad type be suitable? Thanks for your help |

I don't have any modern Elhiem figures (yet!) so can't comment on that. However, the Under Fire and Orion figures fit together well. My WW2 Elhiem stuff is similar so I imagine the modern stuff would match well. I found this website a few days ago: link It might be useful as a terrain reference for the more rural areas. He has more photos elsewhere on the site too. |

Before you leap down the 20mm route have a really good look at the new Eureka 15mm Chechen range (only just released via the 300 club but on general release soon)they are outstanding. Also bear in mind that Zvezda are about to release a cold war range and so there should be cheap tanks and BTRs in plastic available plus QRF do a pretty full range of vehicles. On buildings I have these in 15mm but the also come in 20mm and they are great with removeable floors. fieldworks.org.uk |

Dr. Beard, I've got about 20+ unpainted for this conflict. Not sure of the maker but they are yours cheap for the taking. |

The Orion Chechens are slightly smaller than the Under Fire ones. However, the AKs are about the same length (but a bit slimmer), so you can just chalk it up to natural height variation in humans. Also, for vehicle kits, there are some quick-build moderns coming out soon. S-Model has BRDMs available and BMP (and possibly BMP-2) kits on the way:

Dr Beard, Have a look at the "Crisis in Alcovia " web page wargame site, sorry not tech savy to do the link but it is from the guys who are involved with "Winter of '79 " page. Mark has done all the ground work for you in 20mm using a Chechen type scenario. Regards Allan |

Thanks everyone for your help, it's much appreciated. Allan – Cheers for that info. as you say a lot of the work has been done for me. I'll be going back to his site a lot. Iain – I've been trying to decide between 15mm and 20mm for weeks am still not entirely set! I've seen some posts about the Eureka minis but don't want to wait about forever. I suppose the best bet is to contact Eureka and ask when they'll be released. Is it Fighting15s in the UK? There's a bit of a precedence here as I went with 20mm for WW2 in 2000 just before FoW got big and when I look at the 15mm stuff you can get now it makes me a bit sick! FYI I just heard from Shaun at SandS and they're releasing some Chechen type militia which is timely. Thanks again everyone. |
