The latest 'After the Battle' magazine featured the Reichswald campaign so I was inspired to do some game based on that action. I wanted to keep it somewhat simple, so went with a basic inf coy with tank support against some dug in grenadiers and possible reinforcements.

Thanks for a great AAR, and the table looks fantastic. I've just recently gotten a copy of IABSM, and one of my goals for this summer is to get some games going. – James

That is brilliant.
I think it conveys a broken desolate landscape brought about the ravages of modern warfare very well indeed.

Excellent layout -- really appreciate the work you put into it. Looks like it was a great game. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. I always love the look of 6 mm, the best scale, I think for giving the right balance between board and models. And this board is terrific in its gritty, homogenous feel. I thought your massed trees worked brilliantly – tricky, of course, if you actually want things moving through them, but the colour and look was great.

Thanks for the comments. I like IABSM rules not just for their excellent playability and realistic results, but the scale works out to be just about 1/300. Really neat to see something work nicely in this scale.

how did you make the forests?

Microbiggie26 Mar 2014 3:30 p.m. PST

JK,
Sorry I didn't see this until now.
The forest are cut from large foam cushions. Make a basic shape any size you want. I think most of these are at least 12 inches by 3 feet. Spray them a dark color-black dark brown, dark gray,… Then glue different size chunks of foam or lichen across the tops and the tops of the sides so that it hangs over. Then you can sprinkle more smaller pieces of foam or ground cover across them and spray them a forest color. For this game I re-sprayed the mess a darker pine green to make them look more like the trees that would be in the Reichswald. I can re-spray them a lighter green whenever I need a another thick, impenetrable woods for a game.

I don't game in 6mm scale but I always think that when its done well then 6mm scenery looks better than any other scale.
(Oops-I feel an argument about to start)

Well, it is easier to create something that looks like an actual landscape in that scale. And the scale effect is so much nicer than the crowded tables that larger scales create.
