The 97th Illinois Volunteer Regiment commanded by Col. FS Rutherford fought at Champion Hill in Landram's Brigade, 10th Div. Col Rutherford is my great great great grandfather. The 97th was on the Union Left during the battle. It was under artillery fire for 2 hours during the fight. The 97th fought with distinction in the Vicksburg campaign.

I've been part of staff ride to Vicksburg about 4 different times in the last 15 years of service. I did the last staff ride last year and we went to Champion Hill. We were met out there buy a guy who is the descendant of the owner of Champion Hill at the time of the Vicksburg campaign. In fact, I think his last name was Champion. He was with us on the tour for a good two hours or more and had a lot to add to the staff ride.

Vicksburg itself is great to visit, and the battlefield park is top notch. The people there were friendly, the food was great, and I only disliked the heat and humidity.

His name is Sid Champion. He has worked with the Vicksburg National Military Park and the Miss. Dept. of Archives & History in preserving some of the landscape and putting in interpretive markers.

I only disliked the heat and humidity

But it sure gives one a feel for what the soldiers on both sides had to endure during that campaign. When I helped guide a tour of the VNMP in June 2006 for the gaming convention Bayou Wars – Battle of the Bluffs, it was "helpful" with our descriptions of the siege fighting.

Probably the most under-appreciated battle of the entire war.

Sid Champion! I'm almost positive that was him. He took us over to a portion of the hill that they were deforesting in an effort to restore the battlefield to its 1863 condition. From there he took us back to where there were some fighting positions and you could still make them out. The heat and humidity of late May/early June did not go unnoticed in our group. Walking up the hill to see those positions felt like being wrapped in a wet wool blanket, even in the shade of the trees and a relatively gentle slope.
