The painting sins of the past have just caught up with me. Whilst inspecting the Infantry at today's parade I noticed that there is virtually no consistency in the colours I have painted their drums (I think I just painted the drums whatever colour I felt like at the time!). This will not do. So, does anyone have any good info/links that will show me the basic drum colours for all the major Nations? I am going to need info on French (Revolution and Empire periods), Austrian, British, Spanish, Prussian, and Russian infantry drums. Any help would be massively appreciated! |

You need to check the individual nations, but most went for a brass drum body with coloured 'hoops'. For France it was mid-blue. For Austria black and yellow stripes etc. Some countries such as Britain were partly coloured with a crest on the front. In Britain's case it was the regimental facing colour and badge. A quick trip to any uniform books, Peter Bunde's uniform plates or even Google Images will soon begin to fill you in. |

Yeah sorry, I was being a bit lazy, kind of hoping that someone would have a link to a blog entitled 'drummers of the Napoleonic Wars' or something like that! You're quite right though, I need to do a quick internet search for each of the individual Nations. Shouldn't take too long at all. Thanks artilleryman. Once I have done it I'll make a little list of the colours utilised by each army for people to use in the future. |

Weren't the Russian drums all gold painted? |

@ timpo, I think the bodies (of the Russian drums) were brass, with white and green chevrons on the wooden hoops and white ropes rabbit |

Telestic – I know where you're coming from, I've spent ages surfing around with Google trying to find images of British drums to use for my army but there seems to be very little around – I half suspect nobody's really very sure! So many of the drums listed as "Napoleonic" in museums around the world probably either a) never saw battle or b) were made in the 1930s! |

Lord Hill – do you know this site: fifedrum.org/crfd/BD_1R.htm It deals with British regimental Drums and Colours in the Seven Years War and AWI so it is a bit before our time period but might be of some interest. |

This illustration was attached to another topic today, and shows the drum hoops for the French 88th de Ligne as rose! Most unusual! GdeP |

Tango01 to the rescue as so often! Click on the French banner in the first link, and see the first row of regiments that served in Spain: 65th; 26th; 27th line (bearskin. orange facings); and 27th Leger in sky blue faced crimson. Great collection of drummer pictures! GdeP |
