Gents I'm going bonkers. I've got a film stuck in my bonce that I saw as a Kid a few lifetimes ago and I'm trying to remember it's title. The basic plot is, A group of reb prisoners are recruited to fight Indians out west, they then plan to run away but see thier Union chums being attacked by said Indians, break out thier reb battle flag and charge to the rescue. I thought it was Two flags west, However I watched it a few days ago and I lacked the charge scene at the end. Am I going bats or does such a film exist. Please put an old dope out of his misery. I'm not sure I even want to watch the thing. |

jpattern2 Ah Rock Hudson Again i'm afraid its to late, and it's big John and his union chums that resque the rebs from the hands of the dastardly Mexicans by handing over thier herd of Gee Gees. They do fight some frenchies to get back to the states at the end though |

No, you're not going bonkers, smoggy, or we both are! I can see parts of it in my mind, and I think I see Arthur Hunnicutt (played Davy Crockett in "The Last Command" the 1950's Alamo movie)as one of the Rebs. Definitely B&W. I remember the Rebs' change of heart and a charge. |

The movie does exist, but I can't remember the title of it at the moment. Actually it was one of the better "Western" style "War in the West" movies. I know it shows up on the Western Channel on cable every now and then. The small reb detachment charges the Indians, then leads them into a canyon to make a stand until the Billy Yanks come to their aid. Of course they get wiped out!! There were only 8 of them against hundreds of injuns!!! |

Oh no what have I done We ALL could be bonkers by the time we are finished, we know it exists but in which universe! |

You might be thinking of "The Last Outpost." The Rebels weren't POWs, though, but a troop commanded by Ronald Reagan. Indians attack the Union-supporting town and the Rebs charge to the rescue, literally. Noah Berry, jr. and Bill Williams played a pair of Rebel corporals in Reagan's troop. Bruce Bennett, I think, was the Union commander (who, IIRC, was supposed to be Reagan's brother); Rhonda Fleming was the gal they both hankered for. Sound right? |

donlowry Could be, I was sure at the start of the film they were captives, However i could be getting my lions crossed. I may have a look at youtube to see if its on there and give it a wirl. ta! |

Major Dundee is as close as possible. Charlton Heston plays the Union commander and Richard Harris the Rebel leader. Good movie, great supporting cast. Bob |

I can tell you the name of the book on which it was based

How about Errol Flynn in Rocky Mountain. Black and white? Around 7-8 of them drawing the Indians away into a box canyon. Turned around and charged. |

Oh and good old Slim Pickens was in it. |
| fantail | 16 May 2013 10:18 a.m. PST |
Maybe "Escape from Fort Bravo" 1953. William Holden. |

Hlaven and fantail I've read the synopsis of both films and they just don't seem to fit what I remember Ie rebs recruited from prison, rebs planning to 'go south' rebs save day! Two flags west sounds right but after watching it it's not the one i'm thinking of. It's either a Z film nobodys watched for a zillion years or I've got alzhimers and I've made the who thing up. |

Rocky Mountain had the 7-8 Rebs traveling as civilians planning on meeting some undesirables who claim they can amass a whole lot of westerner s to help the cause; but it all falls through. They save a lady fro an Indian attack on a stagecoach, cross paths with a Union cavalry patrol, and it all ends up with a huge tribe of Indians are going to wipe them out. The Rebs save the day for the others; but are all killed.(except for the youngest reb's dog) I am 63 years old and that is my memory of it. And I always liked that movie. |

Smog, I believe the movie you're searching for then is now titled "Cavalry Charge" starring none other then Ronald Reagan and the vivacious Rhonda Fleming! The original title is as donlowry cited above, but for whatever reason the title has been changed, and is currently available through Amazon.com! The other movie I was thinking of is "Rocky Mountain" with Errol Flynn, and as I just finished watching it it is not the movie you're thinking about. |

vagamer63, I've looked at the plot of this one before and it doesn't sound like the the film I'm thinking of. I'm starting to suspect that as a kid I've mixed the plot of several films and come up with a totally new one. The film that best suits the plot is Two flags West, but I've just watched that and it aint what I remember. Oh well I supose life is just full of frustrations. |

Maybe find a Yahoo group dedicated to Westerns and ask those guys. |

I suspect that you are correct that you are combining 2 or more movies/plots in your mind. The saber-waving charge is definitely in the movie I mentioned. I guess I had heard that they had changed it's title, but I didn't know to what. I do have vague memories of a B&W movie about "galvanized Yankees" out west, but don't remember much about it. "The Last Outpost" was in color. |
