"ABC isn't airing Marvel's now-totally-official Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. until next fall, but that doesn't mean the network won't hype it for all it's worth until then. Following Sunday's release of the first official trailer, the show's in-universe conspiracy theory blog Rising Tide has slowly populated with updates and ABC has released ID cards for S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Phil Coulson, Grant Ward, Jemma Simmons, Leo Fitz, and Melina May. …what S.H.I.E.L.D. means to him, Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) notes, "I'm clearance Level 6, I know that Agent Coulson was killed in action before the battle of New York." I like his line before that: "That someone really wanted our initials to spell shield."

I guess Coulson could have been an LMD (Life Model Decoy). S.H.I.E.L.D. writers have been using those to paint themselves out of dramatic corners since the 60s.
