US launches drone from aircraft carrier for first time link In a mission that has been described as a milestone for military aviation, the US Navy has launched an unmanned drone from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier for the very first time. The Navy hopes the experimental aircraft will pave the way for a new line of drones that could carry out bombing raids from a carrier, heralding a new era of unmanned naval aircraft. |

But did it land on the carrier? That would be the tough bit. Hoser |

But did it land on the carrier? That would be the tough bit. No baby steps |

Tests have included full auto landing with full "traps" on a land based "Carrier" airfield. Next step will be landing on an actual carrier. So far so good |

Carrier landings, while still the most difficult, I suspect have become MUCH more automated than they have in the past. I suspect when they have the tech down, you will see drone carriers in the worlds' navies. Drones and UAVs are quickly outpacing the advancement of all those Popular Mechanics articles of the past 30 years. |

Didn't they do the landing a few days ago? I'm sure I saw it mentioned somewhere. |

It was a trap, but not on a carrier. The X47 trapped on the dry-land arresting gear at Pax River. No live traps on carriers yet. |

Yes the USN has been routinely launching drones from ships, using specialised catapults, for years. Our USN DDG assets under TACON in the Arabian Gulf all had SCAN EAGLE back in 2008, and jolly useful they were too! Unfortunately they really complicate Airspace management, ever an issue in the AG, and are really unpopular with fixed wing pilots, particular ones flying those AC that don't show up on the radar when they've switched their tags off! Back then you couldn't really use them for impromptu sneekapeek missions, more for workaday 'pattern of life' stuff
But I guess if they were off on a deck launched bombing mission they would get a free run all the way
be really useful to write down hostile AA assets

Heck, I was thinking send semi-stealthy drones in to sucker the air defenses while the real sneaky bastards light them up. |
