I would give the edge to the Russians, since they took the Fedioukine Heights and made British supply more difficult. The British army withered away during the winter. It might have done so without the Heights being in Russian hands. The loss of the Light Brigade also figures into the mix. The Russian cavalry didn't cover itself with glory, being roundly thumped by the Heavy Brigade. |

The Russian goal has never been satisfactorily explained. Had they intended to take the port at Balaclava they failed. Had they intended to only interdict the supply line by assailing the outer defenses and holding them, they succeeded
.at least for a time. They did draw troops from the seige which was to have lasted another year. It certainly was a missed Russian opportunity. Given that they lost every pitched battle ( save the siege of Kars) they came closest to victory at Balaclava and that's the best you can say about it. MORE HERE : link |

Errol Flyn Led the charge, defeated the Russian Cavalry, sabred the Russian Gunners and personally skewered Suri-Khan. If that's not winning I don't know what is. In my wargaming live I have played in FOUR Charge of the Light Brigade Games. In each one of them NO ONE wanted to play the Russians, the GM did that. In each one we NEVER reached the Russian Guns. We won. No body could tell us different. If you approach this in a rational way you have lost the whole spirit of the game. |

The loss of the light brigade was irrelevant. Virtually all of the horses & most of the men would have died of disease that winter anyway. The victory of the Heavy Brigade & 'lunacy' of the Light Brigade successfully intimidated the Russian cavalry who never confronted the British in the field again. |

There is a 1969 movie about the Light Brigade starring David Hemmings. Good movie, and much more historically accurate than Errol Flynn's version. |

Outstandingly good in fact, although with a 60's social view expressed, but the charge itself is superbly done. |
