Hello,

I decided to try out the rustoleum matte clear coat that I found at walmart thinking it would be as great as their paint. However, after one quick pass it left a really grainy texture that almost felt like a fine sandpaper. It did a decent job of dulling the shine, but I cant get past the texture it left.

Has anyone used this and had the same result? And what would be the best method of stripping it as well as the dip that is under it?

Thanks,
Michael

Eeek! That sounds bad. No solutions here, but I feel your pain. I had a big batch of minis I primed with Armory's black primer and they all came out FURRY. :(

I'm having trouble with all matte sprays, EXCEPT for Testors Dullcote. Man do I love that stuff.

The only matte cote I have ever found satisfactory is Testor's Dullcote

Ive used Rustoleum Crystal Clear Matte a few times now and not had any issues.I used it on some scenery/terrain though….maybe on figures the texture is more noticable?

Try contacting Rustoleum direct – I know that they have a very good after-sales service and I am sure they will want to help.

I've used both Testors Dullcote (with mostly success) and Rustoleum's matte.

With both I've had a grainy texture, and both times it was when impatiently spraying on a very humid day. Otherwise, it has worked perfectly well. I was able to mostly fix the issue (slight texture still left) by respraying with a gloss, then matte again.

What was the weather like when you sprayed?

@panzerwagon

Thanks, I will see what they have to say.

@Rorschach

I spray indoors and keep the area at 70F. I tried a few test pieces this morning and they had a lighter grainy effect, but I made sure to shake the can for a good solid 5 minutes.

Overall its no biggie. Brake fluid is taking care of the mess and its nothing that cant be redone.
