Was in Smiths today and they have some sort of FOW package – sealed bag with an intro to the game, a basic ruleset and the D-Day Battles book. For £8.00 GBP

Is it worth it ? Would I be able to use the D-Day thing with the basic rules and get a full game ? GW did a pocket sized version of the LOTR deluxe book – just made it small and left out all the scenarios and hobby stuff – is that what the FOW basic book is like ?

TIA.

Never heard of this, might be the local shop selling over some old stuff?

The D-Day compilations are $90 USD USD….

Sorry. WH Smiths – is a UK wide chain of newsagents, not a single shop.

Looked in Norwich and couldn't see it.
Did they have more than one copy where you got yours?

listlurker14 May 2013 10:44 a.m. PST

I've got it. The book is a reprint of all the non list stuff from the compilations, ie the scenarios and beach landing rules. It's pretty good if you didn't buy the lists first time round.

Also saw a copy in the Sutton (S. London) branch and was nearly tempted but then decided I really didn't need it.

They had three or four copies – but it was shelved under gaming, so with computer game magazines, instead of under hobby with the wargames magazines – except for White Dwarf, which is under Comics.

I wish they'd kept them with "military" like the modelling magazines (modelling ia clearly not a hobby !).

@listlurker – is the introductory rule book complete enough, or does it leave a lot of stuff out ?

any pictures of the mag? – is it a part work? figures, etc?

laager5014 May 2013 11:40 a.m. PST

Didn't look there just wargames and history. Will have another look tomorrow.

Thanks

No mention of it on the battlefront web site or wargames illustrate site.

When you say the introductory rule book , do you mean the A5 mini rule book or the open fire rule book.

As I look as it now, it doesn't seem to have any 'special rules' requirements. The airborne assault was lifted out of d-1' the amphibious assault from the first d-day book. The main chunk .. 30+ pages are the scenarios. A new section is 'total war' which looks to be a GW armageddon stylee.

I don't know – that's the problem with sealed / bagged magazines !

listlurker14 May 2013 11:16 p.m. PST

Oh, in the magazine, that's the open fire book.. That's a quick start guide, so I'd say no. It doesn't cover the written rules per se.

Thanks! Sounds like I did right to pass as I'm not already a FOW player.
