Hi

Some years ago my local club wrote an adaption of the Principles Of War rules for VSF, specifically for Redcoats on Mars. Basing was expanded to 40mm frontages (with appropriate increases in ranges and movement rates) to allow for games of HoTT using the same figures. We also wrote add-ons for aerial units, canal crossings and even air landing troops. The result was a set of 'Big Battle' rules that followed the Colonial spirit but with some a different feel. (Steam Tanks, Aerial bombardment and Naval Brigade AA guns will do that). Some people may even remember the game we took to Salute a few years back 'A Canal Too Far'.

Now we want to move on and try other rule sets, so can anyone suggest some different rules that fit the following criteria -

1. Infantry and Cavalry units comprised of groups of bases using DBX basing conventions (units can be battalions or companies)

2. Artillery and vehicles on single bases representing small groups (2-3) of said machines.

3. Does NOT require throwing masses of dice for each unit firing

TIA

Pete

Martian Empires fits all those criteria, but you already know about them!

The hive and the flame might suit this

Hmm I hate to disagree with Mr Sofian, whose work I admire, but while Hive & The Flame is really splendid, being based on TSATF it uses singly based figures and uses buckets o' dice for firing, which don't really match Guthroth's requirements.

When The Navy Walked fits the first two criteria, but uses a number of shoot dice per element (e.g. British Infantry unit consists of four stands, each rolling 2d6) Not sure if 8d6 makes it into the "masses of dice" category.

I like the Soldier's Companion for Space:1889. A company bought the rights to continue publishing the game after GDW's demise so it might still be available.

Ubercommando,Soldier's Companion has been available since publication. You can get it on pdf.It may need some queeking to suit though and updates on the weapons ranges.

Dr Vesuvius, The Hive and the Flame also includes rules for use with 800 Fighting Englishmen and that is a multi-figures to a base game!

So THatF is Two games in one (and all for a whopping ten dollars on RPG NOW!) Although you have to pick up either The Sword and the Flame of 800 Fighting Englishmen to play

Aha! I stand corrected. To be honest I have THATF but don't have 800FE, so hadn't read the sections pertaining to it. Consider me edificated!

Chris Palmer (of GASLIGHT fame) has also adapted Look, Sarge, No Charts: American Civil War as a nice big battle-scale VSF game. I'm sure he'd share his mods with you if you are interested. It meets all your criteria. You can see some pictures here:

He probably has more he can share.
