I have often thought about gaming 1914 in Europe but have never started due to being unsure about a set of rules. I am looking for something very Black Powderish I want battalions as the manouevre elements and to be able to do large multi divisional battles (multiplayer)
any suggestions? FM |

Great War Spearhead: 1 batallion = 4 stands, 1 brigade = 4 batallions, 1 division = 3 brigades. This will probably work for you ! |

I have had some very satisfactory 1914 games with Great War Spearhead, certainly Corps sized battles are very feasible. SB using the same basing system but is more aimed at divisional sized actions. If you want to go up to one base = one battalion then Phil Barkers Horse, Foot & Guns extends well to 1914 and there is at least one 1914 V&B variant out there. I did a WW1 version of Megablitz (Kaiserblitz) which works OK, iirc it is in the files section of the Megablitz yahoo group. Nowadays for Corps/Army level WW1 we mostly play OP14 by Richard Brooks, published in the Wargames Developments Journal a couple of years ago. I can never remember which issue unfortunately but the journal archive is on the WD website. Grid based, manoeuvre units are brigades, bases are battalionish sized. |

Aren't you describing "Home by Christmas" from the Crush the Kaiser chaps? Sounds spot on. crushthekaiser.co.uk |

"Home by Christmas" I think is the same scale as "Where the Poppies Grow". The basic unit is the company. A player is typically a regiment/brigade commander with several battalions, each of several companies. |

Hi Martin the Op14 rules are in issue 36 of the nugget.

I think for the first month or so of the war the black powder rules would work fine. you my have to tweak the HMG's a little but it should all work out well enough. it would also give an interesting parallel between the close and open order german regiments. If you go that route, be sure to post AAR and let us know how you do the BEF. ~Joe |
