Below are links to some photos of a 6mm-scale Mein Panzer 2 game I ran on Saturday. Ben, who played the Germans, took the photos. Sorry, no time for a battle report yet.

The scenario covers part of the German 16th Panzergrenadier Division counterattack on 18 July 1943 against the Russian 4th Guards Motorized Corps bridgehead across the Mius River south of Maranovka. During the game the Germans succeeded in knocking out the Russian ATGs threatening the main attack's flank and gained a foothold in the village before the Russian armored counter-assault arrived.

The terrain is GHQ Terrain Maker hexes with buildings from TimeCast, fences and walls from C-in-C, vehicles an 80-20 split between GHQ and C-in-C, and figures a mix of GHQ and H&R.

Doug,

The rules are Mein Panzer 2 by ODGW. I've had then since the first edition came out in the late 90's and feel they are still the best for a two-four player battalion-sized game. You can add as much detail as you like or keep it simple and fast. They are good for larger actions if you have more players.

Terrain always looks good in 6mm but I just can't love the tiny models, however well painted. Pity 'cause 20mm is so expensive.

Great AAR Steve!

I too prefer the MP2 rules. As Steve has said, they work better than just about anything else for multiple players per side, where each player has about one re-enforced company (or more if they are experienced with the rules).

They give a great feel for the flow of the battle, and have enough detail to engage my intellect and imagination, without bogging down in too much minutia.

One more benefit of the MP2 rules Steve did not mention is that they allow very fluid combined arms gaming, where the infantry plays well and is fun, and doesn't bog down the tanks.

And I too love the 6mm models and terrain. I like to game at 1-to-1 unit scales (with infantry based on squad stands). I want a company of tanks to be a lot of tanks, not just 2 or 3! I have used larger scales (15mm) for skirmish level gaming, but for anything larger I can't get past the visual impact of the scale issues. I want room for my forces to maneuver, and I want distant targets to look like they are distant. Just can't get into the parking-lot-full-of-bumper-to-bumper-tanks look of larger scale games.
