Is the unlikely but apparently true scenario as discussed by Andrew Roberts.

Add in also French politicians, their mistresses and their wives.

Would make a fun movie. Well, except that there are those (and you know who you are) on TMP who would spend the entire movie grousing that the SdkfZ954-kj had the incorrect mess kits.

That creepy German from Inglorious Basterds is standing by his phone, waiting for a call.
George Clooney is too old, but when you have Bruce Willis playing 60 year old special forces lieutenants…

There are a lot of TV actors and character actors perfect for this.
Even re-enactors are stuck with the vehicles & gear they can get. I'd be thankful they could GET a WWII vehicle, wrong model or not.
Kept thinking of Castle Keep…they were stuck with T34/85's.

Ahhnold can be cast as the Austrian leader.

Wow, I thought I'd seen it all, but this is AMAZING!

Hi,

The board game Nazi, nukes and Nato had a scenario for this situation.

In the boardgame smithereens was also a add on for a Allied/ Wehrmacht attack on the soviet union.

Greetings

Who makes 28mm elder French statesmen with blazing Thompsons ?

Rod I Robertson13 May 2013 7:37 a.m. PST

This is even better than the classic silly war picture, "The Castle Keep" with Burt Lancaster and Peter Falk! Outstanding!

I have to believe this book will be made into a movie.

Casting?

Rod I Robertson13 May 2013 8:23 a.m. PST

Ed Asner and Charles Asnavour as octogenarian French politicians. Matthew McConaghie as the redoubtable Lee. Jurgen Prochnow as the head of the Resistance Germans and Rutger Hauer as the SS commander. Jerome Krabbe as "le jeune tigre" and Justin Bieber as the hapless Austrian boy who gets caught in the crossfire and does the Spandau Ballet for most of the picture!

What about that photo? Those look like ADGZ armored cars behind the CV33s. Hence Austrian armor on parade? Tineye turns up no match. Sorry to be a rivet-counter!

When I was in Innsbruck in the 80s there was a plaque on a wall of the Town Hall or similar to those 'Austrian patriots who died in 1945 fighting the Nazis' or similar – my German not being very good i didn't understand all of it, so not sure if it was relating to this incident or others. There are references to the liberation of Innsbruck here link – though without any further details at that point.
Interesting to read the brief biogs of brave men who were Austrians first and not crypto-Germans.

I'm guessing when the article describes an SS Division they're meaning 'elements of' rather than a full sized formation.

Fascinating story! I'll have to add that book to my wish list.

Well, , "a full sized German division, SS or Heer in mid 45", wouldnt it mean elements anyways?

Gary Kennedy13 May 2013 11:30 a.m. PST

Just me being literal ;>

The Gray Ghost13 May 2013 11:30 a.m. PST

by that time most SS divisions were down to brigade strength

Your eyes do not deceive you; AFAIK after a lifetime of rivet counting only the Austrian army pre-war operated both the CV33 series *armed with a *Schwarzlose* heavy water-cooled machine gun and the ADGZ together in the same army in such numbers and kept in such paradeground perfect condition as seen in the photograph that accompanies this article.

Helluva story this! Anyone got Steven Spielberg or Tom Hanks' e-mail address handy?evil grin

The funny thing is, if this were made into a movie and we didn't know it was true, we'd all be hooting derisively at the screen grin
