Hi all,

I've posted a report on a scenario from the Battlegroup Overlord book, Breville, that we played yesterday at the Devon Wargames Group.

I've now played the Normandy rules and the Kursk set and have posted my impressions of the rule set. With some reservations, I like them and am planning to put together a Pegasus Bridge Scenario at next months meeting.

I have posted my thoughts on the rules on my blog

Nice game, lovely models…

With regards smoke, this is abstracted into the requirement to spot before every aimed fire order. Not to everyones taste granted.

Artillery only scatters 4d6 is you roll a 1 for barrage accuracy, and you dont have to bring the guns in too fire on that point if you dont want to. Artillery is limited by both spotters and the activations you have.

Recording of ammo for vehicles adds another factor into the game for players to consider, and stops them banging away relentlessly and have to actually consider what they fire at… It also allows you to have a need for resupply trucks and fun things.

But yes, most certainly more game than simulation, as is the intention, but one that has period feel.

Good to see someone playing the Breville scenario… That was one of mine!

Cheers,

Piers

Hi Piers, thank you.

Ok that gives me a much clearer feel for what the design intent is all about.

As I pointed out on the blog, we are only into our second run through with the system, so my thoughts are clearly couched in terms of, "what do we know". We were very aware that we have not mastered the coordinated fire and movement required to get units into the assault in the face of a determined defence, and several alternate strategies were discussed at the conclusion of the game yesterday. I made reference in the report that a more focussed approach by the Brits may have brought better dividends following their winning of the armour battle

This has encouraged me in particular to find out what will and won't work with the rules. The scenario was fun and provides two well matched but very different forces.

With the British you can try detaching the Bren Teams to provide a base of fire to lay down Area Fire to pin an enemy unit. Once its pinned, then try and use a close assault to eliminate it, or pour on Aimed Fire with the rest of the section.

Also in Breville, use those 3" mortars to drop Harrassing Barrages to pin down the German defence.

Glad you enjoyed the scenario, I think you guys are the first to play it outside the test teams.

I live within striking distance of Exeter – what other historical periods does the group play?
