Going to build the South Essex for Sharpe Practice, and I will use metal figures for the light company but for the rest of the South Essex I want to use plastic. Which company makes the best 28mm plastic British.

I have just painted Perry and they are great. I have also started a Victrix battalion and they are pretty cool as well. Flip a coin – I don't think you will be disappointed either way.

I think Redoubt sell a set of colours for the South Essex.

I like the Perry ones best. I have painted about 600 of them since November.

Irish Marine – while you probably only need one box of infantry for Sharp Practice it is perfectly possible to use both Victrix and Perry British together (and indeed interchange heads and arms) – with a couple of provisos.

I don't think the Perry and Victrix heads work together in the same unit (although Perry heads and Victrix bodies look fine – and vice versa) – the pattern of the shako is slightly different, and the sculpting style differences on the faces work against them being used together.

The Victrix packs are too narrow compared to the packs in the Perry set – they aren't unusable but I think they look a bit odd. I believe at least one TMPer has cut their Victrix packs in half and slipped a plastic shim into the middle to fix the problem.

As I say, the bodies and arms are pretty interchangeable – the Victrix guys look a bit more chunky but nothing to worry about – and the Victrix sculpting has somewhat deeper sculpting than the Perries but nothing too different.

So I'd suggest putting together the arms and bodies for a unit, and then decide whether the Perry or Victrix heads and packs work for you – and use all Victrix and all Perry as appropriate.

Obviously this means whatever figures you have left will get the leftovers…

Perry are a little easier to assemble.

Does anyone do figures suitable for Spanish in 28mm plastic?
Would the bicorne-wearing Victrix early French be convertable?

Dexter, there are some differences in the uniforms but a good paintjob can conceal a lot: link

Perry are quicker, Victrix are more versatile. For Sharpe practice I'd probably choose Victrix – you're not going to be constructing hundreds of rank and file, but both are great, and my most recent completed unit of Perry are my favourite so far.

Excellent! They look good enough to me. So long as the hat is right and the uniform colour is correct, I don't worry about the detail (I realise this is anathema to some Napoleonic gamers, but I don't care, so there).

I have no experience with anything by Perry, for I have been into the 7YW in 15mm for years, after using Stadden and Willie metals for my Napoleonics. I was given one French Victrix plastics set of 60 figures, 1804-07 with bicorns, and at Christmas A Victrix British centre company set of 52. Lots of "planning" since.

I am doing the British as 24 centre company figures advancing, representing the 8 companies of the 88th Foot. Doing also 24 firing, priming, loading, aiming as the 9th Foot. Lots of great variations possible. The 9th are firing by file, from center toward both flanks.

Have acquired on more centre company box to do the 45th Foot and the 48th. 45th will be in defense a la Talavera eve, holding back the French surprise attack, so will be much more radom and disorganized. Have also acquired at flank company box, and will do 8 more figures for the two flank companies of each battalion. Extra arms from the French set allow me to have sergeants with brass pikes in port, hi port position. Shakos for some flank company officers. Notch the back of the knee of the standing officer to depict him running etc. Lots of variety possible.

I agree these would make a great set for doing your skirmish units.
