Not sure about the shields…… but they looks great!

Jeigheff10 May 2013 6:00 p.m. PST

Two of those guys really look like they're slinging projectiles. Good sculpting!

Ok, passing over this, what might be wrong with the shields?

LEGION 195011 May 2013 8:45 a.m. PST

IMHO,I do not see anything wrong with the shields. Mike keep up the great work you do with the figures you make!! Mike Adams

Great poses and animation.

Yes, lovely poses! The shields look fine, but I wonder whether slingers used shields when slinging, which process would presumably be a lot easier with two hands.

Thanks Mike, Colin and Simon. The shields are not cast on. They remain an option. With a central hand grip allows the thumb and forefinger the ability to pick ammunition out of a pouch hanging from their left side belts. (While still holding the shield handgrip) Have a look… Allen Curtis gave the option for the slingers to have bucklers in his WAB 'Hannibal and the Punic wars', I have put them in the photo. Now the shield bosses are big themselves ill admit, they look cool to me anyways. I have some caetra with smaller bosses but not as detailed.

They are wonderful figures. I think that without a doubt Relic have the best 28 mil ancients going.
I like the shields but I would probably put most in may spares box as it would seem that using a sling requited a two-handed action

Those are super nice Mike. Beautiful and dynamic poses.

In the old WRG rules you could have a unit with shielded slingers in the front rank, and archers behind, all counting shielded. I always deployed one, when I could, but never really believed in them! ;-)

Really nice castings.

Since the shields are seperate, these are perfect!
They are so full of life.

My only problem with the shields was: sourcing whether or not Balearic slingers used them! But since they are optional… who cares?!
Excelltent 10++ job

Well, thanks guys for your further input. I can't say where these miniatures rank on the market. It's a matter of what the customer wants. I'm always trying to keep hands, feet, heads and helmets etc. realistically well proportioned as possible. Of course within reason to the limitations of the casting process and the moldmaker/caster. I do believe strongly in our lead free alloy and it does strengthen/support the leaner proportions. Down side is alloy cost and added detail is more abrasive on the mold. Chain mail is a real killer!!!

These will be available with Libyan skirmishers and Ligurians. After that will be approx 3 sets of pike.

Kind regards to LBMS Steve for kindly mentioning Relic Miniatures in the latest Wargames Soldiers and Strategy Magazine. He's done a great job in an article he has written showing readers how to convert and sculpt on Perry Miniatures plastics as well as (iirc) Warlord plastics. He's done a brilliant job sculpting clothes on semi nude minis to turn them into Illyrians and others. I stand to be corrected.

Mike

These are very well done, my problem is that I have sooo many slingers! Maybe yours could be an elite set?

Shame you are not 'into' later Achaemenid Persians………..

Garry

RelliK12 May 2013 5:34 p.m. PST

They are Balearic!!! =Elite

My marching pike with domed shields next… What late Persians do you have in mind??

Thanks Garry!

Mike

I am getting picky in my old age! A number of ranges produce LAP's but somehow they do not measure up to those available in 15/18mm such as Xyston. My army is being built from a number of different ranges.

I am looking for some good mounted command types suitable as Satraps, medium/heavy cavalry and, in particular, some 'cataphracts' – cowboy armoured leggings for the rider with frontal armour for the horse. Ironically these guys could double as early Seleucid Agema.

Garry

RelliK12 May 2013 11:21 p.m. PST

Early Seleucid Agema sounds interesting. So use the same cataphract horses and add chapped riders ??

Eclipsing Binaries13 May 2013 3:35 p.m. PST

These look great. What does True 28mm mean though?

Mithridates13 May 2013 4:10 p.m. PST

Mike

Have a look at these Xyston chappies:

Frontal armour only for the horse as these are only early cataphract types. Satraps could be similar but more ornate dress. These guys could also be used as Eumenes Kappodokian horse guards.

Cheers

These will measure 28mm to the eyes and slimmer proportions.

Garry,

I can do these…

Mike,

I'm all for you venturing into all sorts of period nationalities, but don't let it pull you away from finishing up your Romans!

Nice job on the slingers by the way.

I second the armoured saddle late Achaemenid Persian cav with Greekish helmets. No one makes them in 28mm… well Essex has one model.

This! :) (oh, and more Carthaginians)

RelliK15 May 2013 8:46 p.m. PST

Thanks Keith, Johnathan and Locknar!!!

Mithridates16 May 2013 3:42 p.m. PST

Locknar

As well as Essex, Tin Soldier and Battlestandard (among others?) make such figures but I think RelliK's would be better.

Garry

Locknar17 May 2013 5:20 a.m. PST

Yes they make Persians with scale armour leggings but not quite the armoured saddle style. Newline (SHQ) also makes some. It would be great to see some newer sculpts as most the above mentioned have not aged well in the age of 28mm companies like Aventine, Relic, Crusader etc..

RelliK17 May 2013 5:58 p.m. PST

Thanks guys for your further feedback!!!
