After looking about on Shapeways and looking at this tread ( TMP link ) I decided to try them out, but have a few questions
Has anybody bought Shapeways ships for X-Wing yet, and if so, how were they? Is it worth the extra for the 'higher levels' of material? How was the quality? Thanks!

Yes, I have bought a few of TOPO's pieces. (2) DX-9, 1 shuttle, 1 container. I did splurge for the highest level material, and that does provide a lot more detail. Providing of course that the designer put higher level detail in. The quality is great. Needs a little surface cleaning to remove printer 'fuzz'. Comparing different reports, there is less of this clean up needed on the better materials. I'll get the Container Ship and more Containers later. For TOPO and Gosric, The better materials definitely provide more detail. Mel doesn't put much detail in, so that may not be worth going upscale for his. |

I have purchased about 30 or so. As miniMo says, Gosric, Coolhand and TOPO definitely benefit from higher detail levels (all of mine are in FUD) while for Mel's Phantom's I just went WSF as there's no real detail to speak of. Gosric's Rampart cutter is superb and a monster, easily a contender size wise with the Falcon and Firespray. Coolhand's Huntsman are fantastic as are his Defenders. I'd say place your order with confidence, I haven't been disappointed yet (with the possible exception of the comparative lack of detail in Mel's Phantom's). I will make one last comment that I think is of importance, Gosric's ships lack peg holes
which may or may not be a deal breaker for you. |
