Hi all,

I've got some 1:700 ships where individual planks are visible, but the recesses between them are very shallow and thin.

What methods do people use to pick them out?

I'll make a horrid mess out of painting them individually in layers. I suspect drybrushing will fail appallingly. My only other plan is a layer of a deck tan colour followed by some agrax earthshade diluted with future floor polish.

I'd prefer tested advice if possible – these ships ain't cheap and stripping paint out of detail this fine isn't likely to be too successful.

Thanks!

Paint and wash. Should work.

Consider a light khaki paint and ink stain with chestnut/sepia/"pick your own shade of brown" ink. It worked out beautifully at large scale: TMP link

Do the floor polish wash, but very lightly shaded. You can always darken the wash, but harder to take it away.

Most RN decks were 'holystoned', so would be a very light teak. US navy stopped this in 1931. Decks were scrubbed with soft sandstone, which I think would probably fill any gaps between planks with a mix of sandstone dust and woodchip

Thanks for the advice!

Airbrush a lighter base coat ,use trim tape to mask off individual planking, apply a slightly darker shade, remove trim tape to reveal 2 or 3 shaded planking.
