So here is the next step in building a fleet, the real transports. link This is what probably made up the bulk of the Norman invasion fleet, as there were holds for horses and extra cargo. The Bayeux Tapestry shows "dragon" ships being loaded with horses, but there is no reason to take this literally. Besides, a dragon head could be slipped onto any Viking ship to turn it from a trader to a raider. These are actually a bit trickier to build than the long ships, but they look cool. |

The hull is planked over just like the solid hull of the longship. The planks are reinforced on the inside by "ribs" along the open part of the cargo hold. With the addition of a rail on top, the sides are quite secure. Sorry I can't seem to get a photo to post. It keeps changing over to a link. |
