I've read online that Russian Dragoons have black crests for troopers, and white crests with a black tip separated by an orange line, for officers. I can't find any pictures showing this, particularly, what does the "tip" consist of? Do these colours apply to Cuirassiers also? |

Depends on the period. Sorry could not find a picture but the early (1803) headdress with the 'caterpillar' wool crest for both dragoons and cuirassier officers was as follows: The crest is white. Where it projects beyond the end of the comb on the helmet it there is a thin orange band the end of the crest is black. NCO's had a white tip to the black crest. The tip had vertical orange stripe edged in black. In 1808 the helmet is changed. The woolly caterpillar is replaced by a thinner horsehair plume that is black for all ranks except for trumpeters how get a red crest. So basically if you are doing 1805-6 you need the early wooly caterpillar look, for 1812-14 you need the thinner horsehair. Hope this helps |
