Imagine if you have never seen the Wright Flyer and based on today's planes, somebody asks you to reconstruct it.

That's how these reconstructions work, it's a model of the language in that it's somewhat artificial, idealized model of the proto-language. A bit like trying to pass off Dutch as being English.

At least that's what they told me at the comparative languages course in Teaching School.

This article (with appropriate audio) seems a bit more clear. Apparently some cognates that predate Proto-Indo-European have been found… Nifty.
