Imagine if you have never seen the Wright Flyer and based on today's planes, somebody asks you to reconstruct it. That's how these reconstructions work, it's a model of the language in that it's somewhat artificial, idealized model of the proto-language. A bit like trying to pass off Dutch as being English. At least that's what they told me at the comparative languages course in Teaching School. |
