The impending arrival of the English version of the By Fire and Sword has inspired me to start start a series of posts about the Swedish army during the "Deluge" on my blog. First out is a small study of the Swedish troops in the battle of Konitz aka Chojnice on december 23rd 1656 (January 3rd 1657 in Polish sources) link |

Daniel, It looks like the Swedish figures made by Wargamer better fit the pre-1632 period. Do you agree? |

dbf1676, No, too many details wrong if you are refering to pre-1632 Swedes. Coats are too short and not the right shape and the same applies to hats which for example do not have wide enough brims. Swedish musketeers should wear helmets and everyone but a few men used musket rests. Good part of the cavalry wore a distinictive Swedish helmet based on the Polish-Lithuanian "kapalin" rather than German style Zischagge and native cavalry wore wool coats rather than buff coats. Apperance of Swedish troops in 1650's is a bit of a problem since impression of them has been distorted by an overreliance on the artwork by Dahlberg and Lemke. Problem is that much of their work was decades after the war and shows soldiers dressed in contemporary fashion rather than in style of 1650's. You can clearly spot extensive diffrences betwen for example Dahlberg images made in 1660's during his stay in France and those made in 1680's in Stockholm. Yet they supposedly show events during the same year. |
