Just looking for some help here. I base my Naps in 24 man units at 4 to a base (6 bases). For Portuguese should I go with four centre company and two flank company bases , or just a couple of flank company figures on the two outside bases with two centre company figures? What do you do? |

Assuming they are based on the British model regiment, the split stand of two figures each would look better. |

I base mine historically each regiment has 7 companies in peacetime that is expanded to 10 in wartime. Each battalion has four centre companies and an elite company. |

Portuguese battalions had 5 companies (4 center and 1 grenadier), so 6 stands of 4 doesn't work. I know this because I just painted 4 battalions of them. I know this will be taken as heresy, but I pretty much ignored the grenadiers and just painted center companies. The rules I'm currently using (Black Powder) don't reflect organization lower than battalion-level, so there's no need for the grenadiers. The few grenadier figures I had went on the command stand as the second rank. |

Brian, In these 24 fig battalions, I have gone for 4 flank figures on each end – Portuguese 17th (2nd Elvas) Line Infantry Regiment:

And I take it that all Portuguese battalions carried a single colour? I thought I read somewhere that they had a Kings and Regimental colour. |

I thought I read somewhere that they had a Kings and Regimental colour. I think this is true, but the 1st battalion carried the King's and the 2nd battalion the Regimental. At least that's how I did mine, so please don't point out how wrong this is. |

They had one King's colour and one Regimental colour per Regiment. It is generally assumed that the 1st battalion carried the King's colour and the 2nd battalion carried the Regimental colour, as shown by Raglan above. Portuguese regiments had 2 battalions, each of 5 companies. The 1810 organisation had no light companies but one of the 5 companies in each battalion was a grenadier company. Rod |

Same as Rod
5 companies. So its 5 bases for me. I game GdBde 20/1 figure ratio. So that's 30 figures per battalion, 6 per company. If I were compelled to a 24 figure battalion, the company sizes would be varied. |

Brian, The flags are correct as Rod stated. Raglan |
