I'm looking for a good skirmish game with a campaign/advancement system. Preferably something that allows for alot of variation between highest and lowest ranks.

Needs to be intended for, or adaptable to 28mm.

I've got several games by THW and they just aren't what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd say Necromunda. My pick for campaign based skirmishes. Your gangers earn experience, you gain new territories over the game and you can buy new gear and weapons with the money you earn!

Platoon Forward from Too Fat Lardies might fit your needs. Should be adaptable to any game system. (I don't own it so I can't be more helpful)

The thing about Necromunda is that if you change the names of the weapons (ignoring some of the sillier ones) and the terminology of the 'gangers' you have a pretty decent WW2 skirmish game.

More details please?

If you go to the Free wargames rules site link
They have a couple of Necromunda WW2 conversions called Nazimunda and Necromunda WW2 Skirmish. Go check them out and see if they are what your after.

If you want to try Necromunda, download the rules ASAP. GW is discontinuing all Necromunda products and there's no guarantee how long the free rulebooks and other materials will be available.

Also, if you want to expand Necro just a bit, the Inquisimunda fan-addition adds rules for more military'ish factions, among others.

If you want to get all the Necromunda rules including rules from the White Dwarf Magazine go the this site. yakromunda.com (you will need to sign up). They also have a Living rule book and a fan edition of the rules. Its a nice site.

Infinity has a somewhat limited campaign system (no individual model growth except for ONE model), but it's my absolute favorite 28mm small skirmish game. It's broadly similar to Necromunda, except that it uses d20s instead of d6s for greater variability between units.

Rules and army lists for everything BUT the campaign system are free to download from infinitythegame.com/downloads , but you need to buy the "Campaign: Paradiso" book to get the campaign rules.

Consectari,

I'm not sure if I still have them, I'll have a look at home. But basically, a laser rifle can be treated as a bolt action rifle; there are grenade, pistol and sub-machinegun equivalents; and one of the heavy weapons is a good equivalent of an LMG. The leadership and activation rules work pretty much out of the box, and you can personalise individuals with particular skills (varying combat skills if you want, and I'm pretty sure that there are, for example, first aid rules).

The campaign might take a bit of manipulation – it's based on winning and losing teritories which have particular benefits; and maintaining/improving your 'gang' would have to have significant work on it. ut the short answer is that, back in the day, I started writing a set of WW2 rules using Necromunda as a basis, and found that I had surprisingly little work to do.
