Well, if two years ago someone had told me that I'd be starting an army of pointy-eared pansies then i'd have set them on fire, but you know I decided to take the plunge and bought the new army book.

Half an hour later I bought the battalion box, because that was pretty useful. When the re-jigged one comes out, I'll pick up one of them too.

Looking at the army, it seems pretty good. I like that lots of the plastic sets have heroes in them that can be used as riders or separately. That helps stretch points for the money spent. It also seems that the pre-existing troop choices are still viable, so there's no need for anyone with an army to have to get the new stuff.

I have collected a ludicrous amount of high elves over the years. West Wind makes some that are different but nice in their own way. A possibility if you are looking for a different style and lower cost.

It is a classic fantasy army with combined arms. It has been fun to play and if I was to go down to a single army it would be these.

There seems to be a standard tactic. Stand and fire forcing the enemy to approach, then counter attack the weakened foe with cav and infantry units.

Alternatively, I have been faced with enemies with superior missile fire. (wood elves or such) In this case my archers were spread in a single line and everyone hurried forward. The poor archers never stopped marching long enough to fire and their deaths allowed the harder stuff to close.

I have been totally destroyed by Empire gun lines though, so success is tricky.

It is a great army to paint also.

I recently posted a battle report on my blog with some pics of the army.

I think I must have about 3-4000 points at this time painted. I really have never put out all 5 cav units in a battle, or all of the infantry blocks. The Maiden Guard did well this battle but usually get wiped out. Swordmasters are good but vulnerable to enemy missile fire. A well placed mortar round kills that unit in a hurry. (it happened) The White Lions are OK, I only used them in a few games. Dragon Princes are good if there is a paint judging as part of your games, but Silver Helms do about the same. I like the chariots with long bows as a way to pick off annoying fanatics and such without having to devote an entire volley from a regiment for this. Give characters bows to pick off lone threats in this way also. In my last game 20 Maiden Guard fired at a single Skaven special weapon because I did not give a bow to my wizard who could have picked off the threat with ease. He died about 12 times.

I actually like the spearmen and plan to add 2 more blocks someday. You can really build a nice force with just them and some archers.

BTW. Are you talking about the BRAND new army book, because I did not know it came out already.

I like your figures, Ken. Yeah I got the new book on release day on Saturday. It was a complete impulse buy- and the first army book I'd bought for years, so I don't hang on GW's every release.

I'm looking forward to having an army in bright colours for the first time.

I'm not digging the new Shadow Warriors, and it isn't just the metal prices for plastic minis.
