Old subject that has probably been flogged to death
But I can't find it in the messages. What was the percentage of slouch hat infantry in the AoP? And, likewise, the ANV? Just need a back-of-the-envelope number for the 6mms I'm starting (needless to say, sack vs frock coat vs shell jacket aren't a big concern in this scale!). |

Not real common in the AOP, although photographs seem to show them increasing in number as the war progressed. Slouch hats were far more common in the ANV, although photographs and illustrations done by veterans show kepis and forage caps in use right up to the end. It's up to you. For the AOP I would probably depict one in ten with a slouch hat and one in five or six in the ANV with a cap because caps look cool. |

The shouch hat was more common with western units on the union side (like all Hardee hats in the Iron Brigade and the regulars). For the south (after the early years), 1/3 kepi seem like to be the number I've seen used. Vince |

Slouch hats for western units would be common in the western armies, not in the AOP. The Iron Brigade would be an exception. I've never seen anything indicating that regulars wore Hardee hats in the field. Photograph I've seen show them dressed the same as the volunteer units. |

Camp Chase magazine had an article years back about cap vs hat in the ANV. They viewed photos and estimated that about 80% wore hats. |
