Hey all, you guys are always such a great source of info so here I am again. What would be the compostion of an average company from an average armored division, US army, ETO 44-45? I tried to "google" that and I even tried searching the message boards here but clearly im not using the right terms. So here I am.
Any and all info would be helpful. I have many 20mm minis and would like to organize my US Army in to an actual company sized unit, with maybe recon and engineering units in support???

Assuming you mean armoured infantry (it's not terribly clear whether you mean them or an actual tank company to be honest, although as you said "minis" rather than models, I'm guessing infantry….) this should have all you need:

sorry … both … a tank company and the infantry that might likley support it, i know gobs about the equipment and weapons used but am lost when it comes to unit size and organization. I need to round out my knowledge.

Tank company's much simpler – CHQ of 2 Shermans and a Sherman 105mm, three platoons of 5 Shermans. As the campaign progressed the number of 75mm armed gradually fell, and 76mm increased. There's a handy link here giving ratios for the various armoured divisions as the war progressed:

PDF link

Each battalion had three companies, and a light tank company of 17 light tanks (2 + 3x 5) – M5A1 Stuarts, with M24s beginning to replace them from January '45.

A tank company would have an HQ of 2 tanks and 3 platoons of 5 tanks. The mix of tanks varied with the period and availability.

The HQ had a recovery tank and there would be various other non combat assets.

Note that Dom's link was for the 4th Armored division which did have a few Pershings near the end of the war. Very few of the other divisions got any Pershings.

Take a look here for "TO & E 1 – US Army Armoured Infantry Battalion 1944" and "TO & E 2 – US Army Medium Tank Battalion 1944":

"Very few of the other divisions got any Pershings."

Dom's link to the fire and fury pdf lists them by division along with dates and the ratios of sherman types.

There was no such thing as a company of Pershings during WW2. The 9th AD actually assembled a platoon or two of them; the other ADs that got any scattered them in 1s and 2s.

kevanG06 May 2013 10:25 a.m. PST

who is forming a company?

hagenthedwarf10 May 2013 9:48 a.m. PST

As I recall it Pershings were issued in batches of 10 to the Armoured Division for them to trial and they saw little action (little is not the same as none).

Acording to the old AFV Profile on the M-26, only the first twenty (Ten each issued to the 3rd and 9th Armored Divisions); There were others "In the Hands of the Troops", but none had reached the front by VE Day.
