I'd like some advice on a couple of points please:

1. I normally undercoat 6mm in grey or the predominant uniform colour, black wash, paint on the colours then sepia wash. I used to undercoat black, which is okay but I felt was less fun/less good, as the black made the detail harder to pick out while painting. For WotR armies however, would I be best advised to undercoat armoured troops black?

2. I like the Polemos series of rules which use a 60mm x 30mm standard base size, and I am assuming that this base size will be used for their WotR rules when Baccus releases them. However, until that time, how would you advise basing the major troop types, so:

Mounted Men-at-Arms
Dismounted Men-at-Arms
Bowmen
Billmen (and any differences between retinue and shire levy troops)
Currours
Welsh Spearmen
Welsh Archers
Irish Bonnachts
Mercenary crossbowmen and handgunners
Mercenary pikemen

Hi Whirlwind,

If you like Polemos then I would stick with basing in multiples of 30mm x 30mm. Take a look at the SPQR rules and the troop classifications and basing guidelines from those rules and use it as a rough guide. I undercoat all 6mm stuff from Baccus black as I like the contrast you can create especially with highlights of bright colours against the shadows.

For troops predominately in armour I would definitely base coat in black.

I would then dry brush all over in a dark steel colour (Vallejo Oily Steel being my current favourite).

By putting the metal colour as a highlight all over the figure it helps pick out the detail on non-armour parts, and also acts as a bit of a pre-shade on these areas too.

6mm is small. Small to me means that a bit on the bright side is not a bad thing when viewing the troops on the game table at 3'+ distance. For that reason I tend to make sure the reds, yellows, greens and silver, bronze are brighter so you can see the color not the folds in the fabric. In mass no problems. I think SPQR are 40mm x 40mm bases. I will have to go check.
