Quick question about this regiment – I know about the back badge on the shako, and that they wore the stovepipe at Waterloo, but I also recall that they wore French backpacks for most of the period. Can anyone confirm this, or dis-abuse me of the notion? Thanks, Mark |

Allegedly, the took back packs from French stocks and troops in Egypt, where they earned the "back number." They had their rear rank turn around, and stopped French infantry coming at them in front, and cavalry from the rear (or vice versa!). One source I recall suggested that only their flank companies might still have had French backs by the time of Waterloo. Back in the 1970's I converted some Willie 30mm Austrian German infantry to do 20 figures of the 28th. At that time, we did not know that the British water flask was like a thin barrel. The Austrian flask is like two hubcaps joined to form the flask! If I go on the take them to 40 figures, I have some more conversion to do! GdeP |

I read somewhere the same story , but I am sure it said only the Grenadier company wore them |

Mike Chappell states in MAA107 p.15 that the 28th clung tenaciously to their captured French calfskin packs until after Waterloo, until only sufficient packs were left for the flank companies. So I think that give license for whichever option you choose. |

Thanks for the help, gentlemen. Now I just have to start needling the Perry's to make appropriate figures. |

Elite Miniatures makes the 28th. I have them and they are very nice figures complete with the calfskin back packs. I bought the regimental box that includes enough figures for a battalion: 2 officers, 2 flag Os, 2 drummers, 2 sgts w pikes, 11 kneeling to receive cavalry (3 flank coy rest line), 10 high port (3 flank coy rest line) and a mounted colonel in the act of drawing his sword. The only criticism I have are the two drummers and two sgts with pikes; one of each would have been ideal and only six flank coy figures
I usually have four figures in each of my flank coys. Still it is a very nice set of figures. |

I used plastic Perry , with the stovepipe shakos and backpacks from their plastic French , really easy to remove the canteens and cartridge holder on the British packs and simply add them to the French |

The rear shako plate was a very small oval shaped thing. I think Haythorthwaite shows it in "Uniforms of Waterloo." |

One reference to the Grenadier Co. having French backpacks is in the following book: link Bottom of p.241 ff The Czar was reviewing the Gren. Co. of the 28th in mid-August 1815 and inquired where they got their calf-skin packs. |

I thought the rear shako plate was diamond shaped
link If not I made a mistake on my figures. Also was not aware of the back packs. My regiment carries the ordinary Brit pack. |

Yes, the rear plate was a small diamond shape. |
