I've had some fine games of Bolt Action pitting my chosen list against my opponents chosen list, but I've wanted to play less symmetrical games, where one side has a clear superiority and the inferior force maybe has to only hold on to an objective. Maybe unexpected things happen in the game.

I've put together a set of simple modifications to play unbalanced forces and to include random events.

We played out a game yesterday evening and it worked out very well.

I've summarised the rules on the Scrivsland blog and also done a battle report of how the game played out:

Don't ALL games have unequal forces?

We recently played 82d AB vs Osttruppen in Normandy. While the points were similar the troop quality was very unequal. Game ended in a "very" minor US victory…the Osttruppen fought like veterans!

Playing the same troops tonight. Hope to post an AAR soon.

My long time gaming buddy and I love unequal games. There are very few instances where both sides have comparable forces in the field, and we like to reflect that.

Sure, once in a while, especially with BA, we just spend the points and go to town, but sometimes we just create a scenario based on mass differences. The important thing to keep it fun is remembering why you are doing it and also, perhaps give the inferior side achievable victory conditions.

Very nice AAR. Great minis, terrain and pics!

Very nice looking game!

I cannot remember the last time I played a equal forces WWII game or most other historicals either. I do leave out Fantasy. There it does happen.

Thanks,

John

We recently played one of the scenarios out of the book(point defence?,I dont remember what it was called). It was basically 500 points of French versus 600 points of Germans. The French had the advantage of terrain, and I gave them several stands of barbed wire. The Germans wiffed the pregame bombardment(the infamous "dont roll a one"!)It was a nailbiter game and a lot of fun,and the French won.

I recently posted about adapting the old Squad Leader scenarios for BA as another avenue for approaching the game.

That's pretty amazing. Didn't know you could do CBI/PTO with Bolt Action.

Excellent modifications. We sometimes play balanced sides at our local club or with visitors, but generally with unequal sides at home, which is my excuse for regular defeats against my wife's Germans,

I find that Russians at 500 points can be pretty scary if they use two platoons. 20 extra Russians, even ones that are green, are pretty scary at 500pts when you might only have 20 or so Germans total to fight them with and they now have maybe 60 Russians coming to spread soviet love.

That match looked like a great lot of fun, btw.

Das Sheep,

You're only allowed one free squad regardless of how many platoons you field. You can't get 20 extra Russians.
