Agree with cwbuff, a good book.

Dang. I paid $20 USD for that at the Fort Donelson gift shop! It is a good book, but I'd always rather get it for free!

An Amazon reviewer took exception to the title, prompting this response from the author:

"It is a bit unseemly for an author to comment on his own book in a review, but I will take a leap here. The original title of the book was "Where Defeated Valor Lies", taken from the Confederate Memorial on site. The publisher had other ideas and you see the result. There are many points in the war where one can argue the South tipped the point of no return. My central argument is that this campaign was absolutely significant in starting the chain of events that led to 1865. Thanks all for your interest in this work. KG

Very nicely put!

Interesting about the title. So often attempts are made to portray everything as "decisive". I just watched the TV miniseries about Benedict Arnold, where they tried to claim his defection led to Washington's troops re-enlisting en mass. Right.

This is another book showing Albert Sidney Johnston was in over his head as department commander. What is different here is that Pillow is portrayed as the only Brigadier in the area with fighting spirit, though not with the competence to back it up.

Aside: the early success of Pillow's attack owed much to the cavalry battalion commanded by one N.B. Forrest.
