On this day, Union forces encountered their first serious resistance from Confederate forces after Grant had crossed the Mississippi River. The Battle of Port Gibson, although small in size, was significant in that the Union army secured its lodgement and opened up its route into the interior of Mississippi.

The Miss. Dept. of Archives and History blog "Sense of Place" marks this anniversary with a picture of the restored flag of the 4th Miss. Infantry Regiment which fought at Port Gibson.
