The recent thread on the Star Wolf series jogged some old brain cells. Because I'd swear I'd read something called Star Wolf way back in the day. I recall reading this book in the late 70's/early 80's. What stuck in my head was that the engineer was a Scot. Just like in Star Trek TOS. Of course the title of this book escapes me. No, it was not "The Mote in God's Eye". It was some throw away title about a hard luck starship just trying to get the job done without being converted into plasma. The Captain seemed in a constant state of despair
but that's about all I can recall. Ring any bells? |

Was it by John Maddox Roberts? Before he made it big with his SPQR series, he did sci-fi, and this sounds like one of his. |

By the late, great Edmond Hamilton. Pure space opera, about a human raised among a clan of alien space marauders called "the Starwolves." They're so feared and ferocious that they're effectively under a death sentence anywhere they go. He's a hotshot rising star among the wolves, until he gets into a private feud with one of them
and learns that DNA is thicker than nurture, as he has to flee for his life. IIRC he winds up working for just the sort of guy you mention, always having to hide his former life and always having to resist the instincts and impulses it gave him. It's pure fluff, but it's fun. Alas, it's OOP, but it turns up in used bookstores on occasion. |

Interesting, and a classic from ACE to boot
but not what I remember. This one really reminded me of classic Trek, but without the 'heroic' aspects of the ship or crew. |

Alas, we still haven't turned up The G Dog's book, though. I'll see if my brain can remember that far back
though I was more of a fantasy guy then. A Scots engineer, eh? Hmmm. |

Here's a list on Wikipedia of science fiction novels from the 1970s: link I doubt it's in any way exhaustive, but perhaps a title will jog your memory. Also, 1980s' titles: link |

That describes David Gerrold's story about a hard-luck ship and its near-impossible mission. |

I'm going with "Yesterday's Children" published in '72. The pre-starwolf version. |
