Fellows:

I want to start painting my command/general stand (28mm Essex warlord games). I really want to capture the feel of the period on this stand. Sadly I am lacking inspiration….what can I do? Any ideas will be of help at this point please throw them out there!

Thanks

Essex?

On the one hand somebody could be handing him a pike, as allegedly he fought pike-in-hand at Newbury.

On the other hand he could be on the point of absconding in a rowboat from Lostwithiel…….

He did have a small personal guard of 30 halberdiers, they wore grey cassocks fitted with over 180 silver and orange buttons according to Peachey and Prince. Sounds like a challenge to paint!!

Have a aide-de-camp holding his horse next to a outhouse. have a standard bearer and officer waitng out side. If you can have Essex coming out the door of the loo that would be even cooler. Even generals got to go.

Ha! Perhaps someone does a "Napoleon at Waterloo" miniature that could be adapted?

Edit- oops- Peachey & Turton's Old Robin's Foot was the reference above, not Peachey & prince.

Drink six shots of whiskey in quick succession.
Wait a half hour.
Now you're ready.

Find a copy of the movie "Cromwell". Or, maybe its "To kill a king"?…. whatever, its one of those.
Pay close attention to the Edgehill battle scenes.
Essex makes an appearance. I think he's even in armor.
There's your inspiration.
Copy him exactly. Hollywood is always correct.
This is why you started with the whiskey.
