From David Gerrold. Let's do a science fiction show that doesn't depend on the willing suspension of common sense. Let's have real science fiction writers creating the stories and let's have real science in the stories. Let's have a show where the characters are believable, the actors are more than just chest and cheekbones, and the situations are grounded in reality. Let's launch The Star Wolf. Please check out the link and if you like what you see, then please help us get the word out. If you like what you see, and if you want to see this as a real show, please share the link. link |

How about finishing "The Cthorr Wars" you jerk!!!! |
| JimSelzer | 30 Apr 2013 11:54 a.m. PST |
why? Cthorr was boring and repetative |

Y'know, having relatively recently re-read the Chtorr series
I don't want him to finish it anymore. Maybe I've just moved on past the late Heinlein-esque psycho-sexual-political stuff. Star Wolf might be interesting, though. |

I'll welcome anything to relieve the blech and boredom which is currently on TV. |

How about some non-white people for the costume sketches? (Hysterical cries of, "PC! PC!") Seriously, if you look at the first episodes of Star Trek, it's shocking how many non-white crew members there are, compared to shows in the last decade. (They cut it down in later episodes.) Game of Thrones is fantasy, not SF, but it looks like it was sponsored by a typewriter correction fluid company. There are many reasons that SF fandom is whiter than the general population, but casually leaving out non-white characters isn't going to help. "It's just costume designs!" Yes, but it's indicative of a mind-set. It's like "Flesh" as a paint color. "Maybe it's *your* flesh color, whitey, but it ain't mine." |

I liked the first book. I'd like to see a series. However, I doubt it's possible to retire all the tropes and make it realistic. They sort of started that way with Star Trek. What I like about the first few episodes was the ambient sound effects during the show. They later got rid of that. I have always felt that was a mistake. While I liked the book, I thought it was just a variant of Star Trek so I am curious how he will keep it from being more of the same. |

Well, although fantasy, GoT mostly takes place in what is effectively England. This does look interesting. A Star Trek style show would be welcome. |

Yeah, complaining about the absence of non-white characters in A Game of Thrones is like complaining about the absence of non-asian characters in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's a quasi-European setting, so one shouldn't be surprised by the predominance of European characters. But I will agree that a bit more diversity in a future setting is certainly called for, but that's a casting issue. My objection to the costume art was more that they were all in absurd poses (especially a few of the men), but I realize that's just what a designer drew to convey the look of the uniforms, which are nicely utilitarian, at least. Not wild about the muscle shirt (what is this, Jersey Shore in Space?), but whatever. I do hope on diversity that the diversity is broader than "one of each," which seems to have dominated ST: "Let's see, black guy or girl. Check. Asian guy (or girl). Check. Hispanic guy or girl. Check. Native American guy or girl
" It also gets a bit silly when they're doing it to make a point of diversity rather than just allow a natural feel to it. "Hey! We forgot a Swede! Quick, find a Swede!" It comes down to a fundamental truth— cast for character, not to make a point. What I do like about Star Trek (TOS) is that they didn't ever make it seem like diversity was the point. (Though they did fall down a bit on women in commanding roles.) |

I'm not sure David Gerrold is qualified to discuss good SF. -Kle. |
