So far, everything I have seen leads me to believe that it will be a great zed movie.

PapaSync30 Apr 2013 9:38 a.m. PST

Nothing like the book. But I'm sure it'll stand on it's own. These are the baddest Rage Zombies I have ever seen.

Generalstoner4930 Apr 2013 9:50 a.m. PST

I hope that is sarcasm because if you read the book it will be a complete waste of money. Fast zombies in the form of a tidal wave….. great.

DontFearDareaper Fezian30 Apr 2013 9:57 a.m. PST

Brad Pitt said in an interview that he made it so his young children could watch and enjoy. A kid friendly zed flick, I suppose it could work but I am not holding my breath.

Muncehead30 Apr 2013 10:05 a.m. PST

The book is great – as long as you bear in mind it looks like the film will not be at all like the book, it should be a great rage zombie flick that just happens to have the same title as the book…..

jpattern230 Apr 2013 10:05 a.m. PST

Pitt and the director apparently brainstormed to come up with a "new" concept for "their" zombies and settled on the look of swarming army ants. Because that was something we needed. Sigh.

CorpCommander30 Apr 2013 10:09 a.m. PST

My understanding was that at the time a lot of actors were in competition for their next franchise and the object was to grab titles and prevent their opposition from gaining an advantage. There was no consideration for the source material as such – just to keep it out of the hands of other actors. Brad won out on this particular title. It is all about name recognition.

Dynaman878930 Apr 2013 10:22 a.m. PST

Lets tick off two fanbases (I'd say fanbois but the poor souls woudl be doubly offended) in one go.

"Star Trek Z", by JJ Abrams staring Brad Pit.

richarDISNEY30 Apr 2013 10:24 a.m. PST

Yup. They wanted the PG-13 rating, so no blood.
How can you have a zombie flick with no blood?
Rental, most likely. But at some point, I will see it.
beer

richarDISNEY30 Apr 2013 10:25 a.m. PST

And in all of the trailers, they never mention that what is swarming about is zombies, BTW…

It's common for studios to buy the film rights to popular books and sit on them – with no intention of ever making a film or TV series – so that their competitors cannot actually go ahead and do something with it. Yes, in Hollywood, it is better to spend some money and stop someone else from making a movie than to get out of the way. Savvy IP holders put a deadline in the contract: no serious activity in X years and the rights revert to the IP holder. This allows them to resell their not-to-let-anyone-else-make-a-film rights every few years.

Fish30 Apr 2013 10:48 a.m. PST

The trailer didn't remind me of the novel at all.
Will probably skip this one even though I like zombie movies a lot.

Ron W DuBray30 Apr 2013 11:21 a.m. PST

I will see this only if it on netflix steaming and then I might not sit through the whole thing……the whole army ant zombies swarm is a total turn off to me.

DinOfBattle230 Apr 2013 11:30 a.m. PST

Trailers I've seen look like a complete dud. The book was a C+ in my opinion, and this movie looks like D- or worse.

I definitely won't go to the theaters to watch this.

I just read an article today that they had to re-shoot the entire ending, because the first ending "didn't work".

Oh, well.

John the OFM30 Apr 2013 11:38 a.m. PST

The book featured zeds walking along the bottom of the ocean. Is that any better?

J Womack 9430 Apr 2013 11:50 a.m. PST

I will go see it in the theater, for sure, but… I will go in forewarned that it will not be the epic of zeddy goodness that it could have been, thanks to Hollywood and the business practices thereof.

At least it won't be the utter disappointment that was Dune.

RavenscraftCybernetics30 Apr 2013 12:50 p.m. PST

no blood in the book either.
Zombies when cut, slowly oozed black goo(tm)

That doesn't bug me, lots of great zombie flicks have had water zombies.
Army ant zombies though… looks like craaaaaaaap!

Romero's 'Land of the Dead' featured zombies who walked under water IIRC, and Lucio Fulci's 'Zombie' had zombies who swim. I wouldn't call them 'great' though.

Army ant zombies though… looks like craaaaaaaap!

Why not? After all, before the DotD remake, 'fast' zombies were considered a sacrilege (and some still do today), weren't they? Then it became a 'game changer.' Maybe ant zombies operating in a 'hive mind' concept are the new game changer. Makes them all the more deadly.

Space Monkey30 Apr 2013 5:05 p.m. PST

They're not great movies but they're good by zombie movie standards. 'Shock Waves' was another good one… as well as the wonderful preview for the never-produced 'Worst Case Scenario'.

A zombie hive-mind isn't a bad idea… I'm just saying those previews for WWZ look like craaaaaaaaap!
As is the idea of making a 'family friendly' zombie film.

Ratbone30 Apr 2013 5:06 p.m. PST

Are the comments here from special folks who have already seen the movie or are they just the automatic assumption that the book is always better than the movie? Not that I tend to disagree with that sentiment since it's usually true, however, I have found that many books which I would not be interested in reading I enjoy movies of them, OR I will read a book after seeing the movie even though I previously would not have bothered with the book itself.

Ratbone30 Apr 2013 5:09 p.m. PST

I hate fast zombies mostly because I hate fast moving action on film. It tends to be hard to follow and I get suspicious that they're using trick photography instead of good effects and actors/stuntfolk. I wish they could have a middle range speed where the zombies are surprisingly fast, yet NOT faster than the speed of a bullet. I often feel like fast zombies have somehow gained an ability that the human body is just not physically capable of. While it does make them scary, it also shatters my attempts to place a "lens of possible reality" onto the setup.

It's almost like if they put the special zed infection into a car that car would not just be a fast car but instead a transformer.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP01 May 2013 8:18 a.m. PST

So…you folks had your own little "Negative Waves" thread but felt obligated to also wander over here.
Not that I really expected anything positive but hell, I had to give it a shot.

Dynaman878901 May 2013 8:27 a.m. PST

> I often feel like fast zombies have somehow gained an ability that the human body is just not physically capable of

You mean like continuing to live with no heart or lungs, or no lower torso and thus having completly bled out, or without air or water or food for years on end?

WarWizard01 May 2013 9:25 a.m. PST

"no blood in the book either.
Zombies when cut, slowly oozed black goo(tm)"

The zombies don't have to bleed but thier victims do.

DontFearDareaper Fezian01 May 2013 12:38 p.m. PST

Just read an article where Brad Pitt had to bring in a script doctor and reshoot about 40 minutes of the film at the last minute. This does not bode well.

D for Dubious11 May 2013 8:35 a.m. PST

Looks miss-able. I think what puts me off is the sort of dishonesty to the title. It isn't a film of the book, it's a film about Brand Pit(TM) versus the generic zombies. In fact if it was called that I'd be more likely to go see it. By sticking the name of a book I enjoyed onto what is probably a fairly routine star vehicle, it's trying to buy goodwill it hasn't earned. I'll likely watch it when it gets as far as TV but not before.
