That might the "lowest" point value game of FoW I've ever seen played! Goes to show how much good FoW gaming you can get even with fewer forces on the board…though I'm sure the new beer selection helped with that (my current favorite brew being Great Lakes Brewing's "Elliot Ness" BTW!).

Another great looking visual AAR of a great game. Makes me want to break out my collection and play the same scenario in the very near future…only wish mine would look half as good as what's displayed in this AAR.

Thanks, VB

really good report & photos like the middle pic very atmospheric

GeoffQRF30 Apr 2013 11:25 a.m. PST

I'd like to see that game replayed using something like Force on Force.

Yeeeeeeowch!

That's a Pyrrhic victory, all those men down.

I am really enjoying FOW Nam! Working on more PAVN at the moment

indierockclimber30 Apr 2013 5:29 p.m. PST

US:
HQ + Medic
1 Full Comnay Platoon
4 Slicks (Aviation Platoon) (We let one Slick return as Medevac jusy to see how it worked)
1 Hog

PAVN:
2x Infantry Companies w/ 1 Platoon each (funky- but it's all I had painted yet!)
They have the LMG upgrades
1 HMG nest

Indie, what have you used for those ploughed effect fields?

Lion in the Stars30 Apr 2013 10:30 p.m. PST

Poiter50, I think that's from one of the GF9 terrain sets…

You can fake it with singlewall corrugated cardboard (the kind of stuff that coffee shops use for a non-burning handle), and I'd like to make some flooded paddies at some point.

jdginaz01 May 2013 11:15 p.m. PST

Got to say while the helicopters look very nice the terrain just doesn't look much like Vietnam to me.

Now this guy's terrain looks more like what I would want the table to look like.

And this table is the ideal,

Agreed! I am new to 'nam so my terrain will have to evolve as I go on :) That second link is just awesome!

The BP40s couldn't keep it at bay? We've found those little RPGs to just be menacing!

indierockclimber05 May 2013 5:27 p.m. PST

That being said, I just wrapped up some .50 cal AA for the PAVN tonight… that'll be a nasty surprise for the next chopper that shows up!

Also re-read that only infantry and self-defense AA need to re-roll the firepower to down a chopper. Those .50s are probably gonna eat em for breakfast.

Figure 12 shots at 4+… With a 5+ save followed by a 5+ fiewpower. 1 or 2 downed choppers per round of shooting. Of course, they're gonna have every minigun from here to Saigon trained on them in the following round…

indierockclimber05 May 2013 7:28 p.m. PST

Yup, any infantry team can shoot choppers. Not man-packed guns though. So the LMG can't, but the assault rifles can. AND remember they get an extra 8" when shooting those choppers!

indierockclimber05 May 2013 7:37 p.m. PST

We had our first chopper shot down in a batrep we'll be posting tomorrow. Those RPGs can be deadly en masse!

Table looks great. I love the choppers and backdrop photo.

One suggestion would be to "scrub up" the battlefield. Get some bags of Woodland Scenics Foliage packs. Tear them into small pieces and spread it around all those open spaces.

You want to break up the open terrain.

Oh those explosion markers are cool, where did you get those?

Cheers, Xin.

indierockclimber06 May 2013 10:11 a.m. PST

@Xin- agreed! You'll see some Buffalo Grass in the newer AAR. The explosion markers are by paper Terrain

"I forgot that the BP-40's could fire AA…..again first game."

RPG can be used as AA? I've done a fair amount of reading on the Vietnam war and don't remember reading that they were used as AA. Sure they used them when they were in the LZ but that's a lot different than shooting at gunships flying over head.

I seem to remember that in "Blackhawk Down" it's mentioned that the Somalians used specially modified RPGs, which may or may not have been taught to them by AQ, to shot down the Blackhawks which again were only hit because they were hovering.
