Anyone play or played it? Fun? Easy? Worth picking up? Thanks! |

The rpg? I played a fair bit of it pre-Savage Worlds, but can't speak to the latest version. It was clunky and awkward at times, and some of the monster and adventure designs were
sub-optimal. Despite those issues it was a lot of fun, though personally I was more fond of the post-apocalyptic version. |

Deeply involved in the roleplay and the miniatures game for a couple years. Loved it, at the time. The rpg packed a lot of complexity, I felt, but once it flowed it went really well. The miniatures game pulled me back into painting miniatures, for which I'm grateful and my wife is still horrified. Biggest heartbreaker is when it all had to stop. Still prefer Great Rail Wars core mechanics over the fixes Savage Worlds made, although I understand what SW was trying to achieve. |

If you are referring to the current "Reloaded" version, I would say yes. I really like the Savage Worlds system for both role play and miniature battles. Never played the original, heard it was clunky, and never played the D20 version. |

Pretty much what they said – the original sold itself on the setting (very innovative and original at the time) not the clunky mechanics, and the modern "Savaged" version is a marked improvement with the same great background. The Great Rail Wars miniatures rules were terrific, easily one of my favorite rules sets in both editions and with some excellent expansion/campaign modules. So yeah, worth getting if you like the setting concept, and don't feel bad about missing out on the early editions. |

For a while the original was a free pdf. I have it on my drive somewhere. Clunky but fun for its time. |

I am still a huge fan of the original Deadlands. The system was unique and fun to play. Not a big fan when it went to the D20 version and have never checked into the Savage Worlds version. The story and history for me was a big piece as well. Get your players to embrace the world and it's even more fun. |

Also a HUGE fan of the Original Deadlands (Not a fan of the Savage Wolrds system). Loved the mix of dice, cards and poker chips. To me, not really clunky at all after the first few sessions so everybody got the hang of it. My issue with the SW version is that characters get overpowered way too fast, IMO, creating 'super characters' quickly. Fun for a 'one off', but not too good for campaigns. Again, IMO.

Our group played it for several years, alternating weekends with Earthdawn. It seemed heavy on comic book zaniness and low on Western horror
lots of jokes and silliness
but the rules didn't promote scares at all, in fact they seemed to breed play that was the 'kick in the door and go in blasting' sort
which can be fun, but it's not what I was looking for. There was never any real sense of danger to be had. I'd rather run a Western themed Call of Cthulhu game
or play that Old West version of Werewolf. |
