Anyone else following this series? It seems rather dark and realistic, can't vouch for historical but it has the right "feel."

I've been pleasantly surprised by this series. I'm not generally a big fan of History Channel documentaries, which so often feel like overly-simplistic war-porn. I haven't seen any other dramatic series they might have produced, but I'm finding this one very engrossing. – James

While I do not normally do Wikipedia, the section on the TV series goes in depth on the relation to history both positive and negative.

The marriages, he had 3, seem to have skipped the middle wife. Rollo is based on the founder of the Norman dynasty in France.

In regards to the show, I have been disappointed in some of the views on Viking culture. I would not have been surprised about the sacrifice of slaves but of Viking natives, I was surprised.

All in all I enjoyed it. The episodes involving action in England were the best.

Two thumbs up so far! I was pleasantly surprised. No horned helmets!

It's OK.
I wish they had called him "Ragnar Hairybreeks" instead.

No horned helmets!

Clearly historically inaccurate. evil grin

When is this fabled show on?

I think it's Sunday's at 10:00 PM but the season just ended. I am sure they are available on the net somewhere.

Thomas O30 Apr 2013 6:45 a.m. PST

They are available on the History Channel's web site. Not a bad show, just think it's real strange that the Vikings never wear helmets in battle. Though I'm glad there are no horned helmets!

I've enjoyed it.

Helmeted Vikings – not sure they had helmets in the
8th/9th C. Maybe boiled leather here and there.

I'm finding it quite interesting, especially the non-military aspects.

Howler30 Apr 2013 1:10 p.m. PST

My favorite, although the sacrifice part was caught me off guard.

sneakgun30 Apr 2013 8:34 p.m. PST

It's free on the History Channel Website, they only did 9 this season, set for 10 more next season.

The Gjermundbu helmet shows that they did have helmets during the Viking Age. Finds from Vendel and Valsgärde show that helmets were available in the seventh and eighth centuries. The number and quality of metal helmets is up for debate, but not the fact that they had them. The problem is that we have absence of evidence, not evidence of absence.

Ed Mohrmann03 May 2013 4:52 p.m. PST

Found a single reference to a Viking helmet found in '43
in a burial mound in Norway. It dated to the 10C.

The narrative suggests that, given other finds on-site,
the owner was a very rich Viking. It also suggests that
the pattern, if not the material, might date to an earlier
age, which supports 8/9C availability.

So again, helmets *might* have been very rare, especially
among the more common folk.

number409 May 2013 10:30 a.m. PST

All the Saxons in the series are shown wearing helmets so it's pretty bizarre that the Vikings who took everything else that wasn't nailed down, didn't help themselves to helmets too…mind you, that wouldn't show off the mascara and new age haircuts ;)

Rogue Zoat09 Jun 2013 9:13 a.m. PST

Bit late here, and I've not seen the show yet (Do want to though). Persumably the absence of helmets would be for dramatic reasons. In the same way that a lot of the cast in Band of Brothers frequently ran about without their helmets on- means you can tell the characters apart better. Maybe? No? :/
