Should they remake the old 70s movie?

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER28 Apr 2013 8:32 p.m. PST

Not NO, but you know what NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John the OFM28 Apr 2013 9:25 p.m. PST

Michael Crichton invented the "When amusement parks go bad!" genre, and no one else seems to have picked up on it.

Mako1128 Apr 2013 11:25 p.m. PST

Nah.

Perhaps a sequel though, e.g. East World, South World, North World, etc.

Etranger28 Apr 2013 11:44 p.m. PST

John – does Jurassic Park count in that genre?

freewargamesrules28 Apr 2013 11:57 p.m. PST

No. Not seen a remake yet that has been a patch on the original. The recent Red Dawn for example was awful.

Love to see it! just think of all the cool stuff they could do with it now, but then again I wanted a remake of Rollerball and see how that turned out. (just watched that trailer talk about spoilers:)

No most "re-makes" aren't.

Yamato 2199, just plain awesome.

Remaking Westworld? The original didn't really make an impression on me so go for it.

They should remake Futureworld instead, that one stunk to begin with.

James Wright29 Apr 2013 4:29 a.m. PST

I don't know. The remake of The Last of the Mohicans was substantially better than the original movie. And also better than the book, at least in my humble opinion.

There are movies that are remade with a twist that aren't bad either. Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven come to mind. Just have to watch them as separate movies is all.

Dynaman878929 Apr 2013 5:19 a.m. PST

> Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven come to mind.

Magnificent Seven does have to answer for the sin of all those increasingly horrible sequals…

Rrobbyrobot29 Apr 2013 5:38 a.m. PST

Not unless, or until, someone does a really good remake of War of the Worlds. Then that team should be chained to their work stations 'till they get it right.

Sundance29 Apr 2013 5:42 a.m. PST

Remakes rarely are better than the original, though the directors and producers think they can do a better job. Leave well enough alone – Westworld's a great movie!

James Wright29 Apr 2013 5:52 a.m. PST

>Magnificent Seven does have to answer for the sin of all those increasingly horrible sequals…

Touche. That said, that is a different subject, being crappy movies. That would require it own forum, as most of them pretty much suck these days.

Martin Rapier29 Apr 2013 7:15 a.m. PST

As above, Westworld is actually still a pretty decent film, so why ruin it with a modern remake?

firstvarty197929 Apr 2013 7:37 a.m. PST

As remakes go, "True Grit" did a commendable job. But true, most simply can't live up to the original.

Phil Hall29 Apr 2013 8:07 a.m. PST

Remakes aren't for those who saw the original. They are aimed at those who never saw the original and wouldn't like it if they saw them. Not enough car chases and explosions for the latest batch of movie goers. Personally I'll see a remake if I thought the original could be done better. Some have turned out ok and others haven't.

I would never see a remake of Casablanca which I have heard is being talked about. On the other hand Rooster Coburn and the Lady was a decent movie although it was African Queen set in the old west.

Yes !!! With Tom Cruise as The Gunslinger.

Awesome !!!!!

chriskrum29 Apr 2013 10:01 a.m. PST

The original isn't a very good movie, so why not?

Agree with James Wright. Not a big fan of "remakes" in any genre. That said, I can game several different versions of the Battle of Midway and appreciate each one for its own take on the core concept.

Likewise, I wouldn't necessarily mind a different version built on the story of Westworld, as long as it was a good movie in its own right.

Like wargames, it is easy to tell when someone is trying to copy someone else's idea and "fix" it instead of interpreting the source material on thier own. The stench usually gives it away early.

BTW – The original is an awesome movie.

Who would replace Yul Brenner (aside from tom cruise).

As long as it had more "companion" robots, I would go see it

Daniel Craig ? He's a bit wooden but he lookms like a psycho.

Or Ben Kingsley ? "What this cigarette ? No. No. I'm not going to put it out. So what? Now it's your move. What you going to do ?" That is pure psycho.

"As long as it had more "companion" robots, I would go see it",
I see where you're coming from but part of the forgotten beauty of this film and helped it's wide appeal was that it held back on the obvious adult based themes that it could have ran with (there was a porno called Sex World made which apparently won the no doubt hard fought for best porno award, the hovercraft journey scene was filmed in a rented holiday coach on the motorway, quality stuff), but Westworlds purity is like a god gene to the longevity of it's appeal which enabled me to bring it into my primary class aged 11 when teacher asked for suggestions to kill a couple of hours though i adjusted the age certificate but everyone loved it as i knew they would and it was safe, a remake of this could be brilliant and cover allsorts of forgotten points we need reminded of now we're 100x more intense technology wise, they've copied this film a thousand times but never remade it as if it's like a Hollywood holy grail but i think it would work and scare/remind people just as much in a rough present setting day if done right, bored of waiting.

Grand Duke Natokina06 May 2013 10:50 a.m. PST

I think it would be a bad move.

Grand Duke Natokina06 May 2013 10:51 a.m. PST

I also think a second sequel would probably bomb. There was Future World.

I had never heard of it, but…
let's wait another 20 years and see if Hollywood gets better at anything other than nudity and explosions.

Weasel28 Apr 2015 8:22 a.m. PST

This might be semantics, but I tend to prefer "inspired by" over remakes.
