I've found in my limited wargaming scenario's, that sniper's do not feature greatly as an effective asset ? I'd welcome more feedback on this subject from our talented & knowledgeable readership. Slightly off topic. 40+ years ago I read from my local library a very good book on I think the Battle for Caen, or similar title. In it, the men/teenagers from the Hitler Jugend, were creating real problems sniping from the trees in the bocage, was there any bocage around Caen? The British answer, was to send a Crocodile to incinerate the trees. The teenagers, having strapped themselves to the branches could not quickly escape, it must have been a grisly sight. Anybody remember reading something similar ? Id like to read this particular book again. |

Is it Caen:Anvil of Victory? If not it's Flamethrower by Andrew Wilson. |

I've found in my limited wargaming scenario's, that sniper's do not feature greatly as an effective asset ? Very difficult to accurately portray. And yes, I'm a bit biased having been a sniper for several years. A well trained sniper could hold up a large body of men even if inflicting only minimal damage. I know of at least one instance (post WWII) where between 30-50 trained men were pinned down for several hours. Oddly enough an SF set of rules -Tomorrow's War- does a decent job of handling snipers. |
