I'm struggling with a suitable colour combination for my 10mm Indochine basing, am I right in thinking the Vietnamese soil type is a predominently rich orangy brown to dark red earth shade?

I'm thinking GW Skrag Brown with Vallejo Dark Umber wash followed by drybrushing in a lighter tone. However to my eyes this apperas too orange red, almost martian. Any suggestions appreciated.

Or am I entirely going along a wrong route and shuopld look at a more subtle grey/brown?

No, the burnt orange and even outright red is only a portion of Vietnam, more the northern part of South Vietnam, but certain parts of the central area too. Other portions are just as dark brown and loamy as parts of England or the US. The soil of Vietnam is really quite varied. I chose burnt orange simply because it's more stereotypically "Vietnam" in my mind

What color is your table?

Ground color is less important than you think, since the majority of what you create ought to look like this:

I use an ochre colour for basing, with a burnt umber wash & dry brushing with a very light ochre or gray. I also use a craft paint called (reasonably enough) "Potters Clay" ( by ?Semco) which is a close mix to photographs from the Central Highlands.

Cheers guys, table has yet to be done as i'm painting figs first, still undecided on this, but may go for a more muted red brown, aim for something that is usable across a wider range of terrain.vallejo cork brown perhaps, will post results.

Lovely terrain Etranger, hope mine comes out as good

Cheers

My mental image of Vietnam is red clay soil. I know it's not correct for LZ Xray or most of the operations of the Black Horse cav, but that's what they're getting.
