Hi All,

I am interested in on-line terrain generators as I am primarily a solo gamer. The "best" I have found has been on the Muster the Troops site, but…

musterthetroops.com

…it has a grand strategy sort of feel to it. Has anyone come across other terrain generators that they use for setting out a wargame?

Well, you see you can buy these wooden cubes …

We have had a number of terrain generators in our rules back in the 1980s and 1990s. The World War 2 version could produce over 2000 different scenarios. We did them for our Napoleonic rules and small scale 1750-1865 tactical rules as well as the 1750-1910 skirmish rules.

Out one year shirmish campaign system also had one as part of the whole system.

There's one in Too Fat Lardies 'Platoon Forward' solo gaming supplement, aimed at platoon level skirmish games.

The Perfect Captain has one:

Reminds me of the old Tabletop Games booklet with maps numbered 1-100. Haven't seen that one online, though.

Thanks Guys,

I like what you say, but Muster the Troops gives an online map that can be configured to any board size

eg 6x4, 3x3 and so forth

The simplicity is good, but it lacks a sense of rational geography in that it only has a few terrain options and these can often give some results that are not the type of terrain that would represent a battlefield.

eg lots of thick wood with little open ground.

This is obviously altered by the period that you are gaming. A WW2 game may be fine to have dense different types of terrain while a biblical battlefield might look very different.

What I am looking for is an online generator that allows for some logic to the results it throws out.

ie a desert battle field, a European lowlands battlefield.

probably a pipe dram, but thanks for the input.

What are these wooden cubes….they sound very versatile…do they have trees on them?
