I remember seeing a drawing/painting of a French soldier wearing a bearskin. The the design on the top had a white cross, which divided the top into 4 quadrants. The quadrants were blue and red, but I can't remember if, starting at the top left quadrant – top right – bottom left – bottom right the color scheme went blue – red – red – blue, or the opposite, ie started with red. Thanks for any help. R |

Rousselot did a plate on elite companies, and it shows a bearskin with top left and bottom right quadrants dark blue, the other two scarlet. I do not remember translating his text to see if this was "official," but rarely used, or unique to a few regiments. I have not seen a specific regiment with this feature. A couple others here posted think, which shows the varied elite companies: link GdeP |

Did the Guard always have grenades or did they start with the white cross? |

The same link as entered above shows a Guardsman in figure 2 with the red patch, white cross. Note that he does not have a rolled overcoat, so must be early – Consular guard? link GdeP |
