Hi,
I'm going to be buying the rules when they come out but want to get a head start on painting my figures. I'm looking at either the Cossack Skirmish set or the Ottoman Skirmish set. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them and could say whether they are effective out of the box.
I've had bad experience with starter sets in the past and don't want to waste money by having to buy new figures to make the force competitive.

Thanks,
Ferb

Ferb,

Not sure about the skirmish set but I have bought 2 boxes of the Janissaries and they are great figures.

I also have a box of Polish winged lancers and again great minis!

@Ferbs, all skirmish forces allow you to field a basic amount of troops, so they are all equal in strength and abilities. Each nation and unit/formation has its own rules to further make them play different and have completely different tactics.

The Cossack army is for the player who likes to defend, lots or troops and mobile fortifications in the shape of battle wagons armed with muskets and light artillery.

The Ottomans are a lot more varied in what their units are able to do, the Skirmish set however is heavy on mobile troops to be able to match those of many other nations.

Furthermore there is a completely fresh concept on army building and army strength in By Fire & Sword, so if you or your opponent field a weaker army you get a lot of tactical advantages to make up for it. These range from being the defender, rolling scenarios and picking additional effects. I'm going to cover these on my blog tomorrow when I post my Skirmish battle AAR in the Battle Report section of this subforum – so keep an eye out for more info :-)

Thanks Anatoli, I should have known you'd have the answers.

BTW you should be getting commission on all the sales of their stuff you must have generated :-)

We received many questions in relations to army's construction in ‘By Fire and Sword': how does it work, how to do it, how should I build my army, how Skirmish level works? To at least partially answer that, we decided to present part of English rulebook with information about it. Although description is in regards to Skirmish level only, it should be very useful and give You some foretaste before Division level. Soon we will also publish few examples of skirmish groups and regiments. You can download that sneak peak from our download section, it's called ‘Using Army lists' (bottom of page)

@Kadrinazi: You may want to change the description of one of the downloads. It is currently called: "Regimental Rooster [sic] Sheet – Skirmish Level"…
