What sort of birds supplied those 2+ foot long feathers? Must have been a lot of them in Italy to supply all those legionaires. Do they still exist, or were they hunted to extinction by army contractors?

RelliK27 Apr 2013 5:54 p.m. PST

My guess is pheasant tail feathers. approx 18"+/-

Meiczyslaw27 Apr 2013 8:10 p.m. PST

Supposedly swans raised specifically for the purpose.

Perhaps ostrich? Rome did have contact with Africa.

Interesting question cytaylor not actually thought about that before.
Interesting point as to whether they are real feathers and not bronze ones. Thin bronze 'feathers' for cavalry helmets certainly an Italian style of the time.
Cost of metal vs feather availability interesting.

Perhaps Buzzards? They have a large wingspan…

I believe "Meiczyslaw" is correct. One of the ancient writers talks about the type of feathers the Romans used, Livy I believe, but somebody need to double check this!

I need to correct myself, it's Polybius book#6 is where he describes the 18 inche feathers for helmet crests.

After bring this question up on the SOA forum, I don't have any evidence to back me up. I'm sorry for confusing the issue!
