Please have a look at my latest blog post; a quick tutorial on making burning and smoke markers for WW1/2 tanks and aircraft, although the applications are limitless, enjoy: link |

That's about the way I do it. I found some day-glo type acrilics at our local crafts store, and use their red (actually a sort-of red-orange) and yellow. And I glue a small washer to the bottom to help hold them in place. |

I use a somewhat simpler approach. I don't go in so much for big clunky kill markers. I want something a bit more intimate, that looks like the flames are ON the vehicle in question rather than on a manhole cover lid set next to the vehicle. So I buy cheap synthetic yarn at my local crafts store, snip it into short lengths, and fray it. During the game, I just drape frayed strands on the vehicles that have been hit. I mix orange and black yarn for kills, and use just black yarn to indicate damage (under the hull for a mobility kill, around the gun for a firepower kill).
Here two Marders have taken fire. One is destroyed, the other is tracked.
A StuG destroyed in a gun-battle. I've spent about $2 USD on yarn, which gave me 36 inches of black and 36 inches of orange. With that I figure I can mark about 140 damaged or destroyed tanks. Not including the time at the store purchasing the yarn, I have invested about 6 minutes into the project. And
I think it looks great on the game table! -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Thanks, donlowry, for the tip. I want to make some markers like this too and I think the day-glo paints you use would give me the look I'm after. |

I believe the colors I used were cadmium red, cadmium red light, and cadmium yellow. |

I had some woodland scenics 'fall foliage' which was already bright orange. I simply glued some to a washer and sprayed the top of it black – it looks exactly like the fuel/air explosions used in Hollywood moves.
For aircraft, colored pipe cleaners are simple and perfect; straight black or twisted black & brown for smoke. Burning aircraft get red and yellow twisted together, with the tip blackened.

Nice work, Abwehrschlacht. A bit different to others, which is a good thing. |
